Is anyone else regularly affected by bouts of “can’tbearsedness”?
I just don’t seem to have any energy for tinkering these days. I especially can’t be bothered with comparative listening.
Not sure if I’m getting even lazier (hard to imagine) or whether it’s just satisfaction with the sound I’m getting that’s removing the drive to experiment. I guess it’s a bit like being satisfied after a big meal and having no appetite?
I do like to listen at every opportunity and I’m thrilled to have two decks set up after years of buying decks and not even firing them up. I still seem interested in trawling EBay. Posting and reading here and even buying bits. I just can’t be arsed trying them when they arrive.
Anyone able to relate to that?

Going back to my early 20s I’d spend ages polishing connectors, repositions speakers, driving screws into the floor, colouring the edges of CDS, freezing CDs etc etc. Maybe there’s a lot to be said for sloth

Never been much for tweaking. Did design and build a couple of sets of speakers but that was years ago. Bought a lot of CD players just to see what they were like. Now I only swap stuff around if something breaks. Which is quite often.

At least putting money into your Krell will be an investment.

I know, I'm used to it now. Most reliable amps I ever had were Linn, Lk1/Lk100 for 7 years, never had a problem with them.

I'm very much a ''plug & play'' kind of audiophile. I don't desire to tweak my system. If something sounds good, I just leave well alone. Something sounds off, then I just swap stuff etc.
Each to their own.

I'm happy with what I've got. I still love looking at tt's and am still interested in trying a DD, but don't know if I could be added with all the hassle. Must be old age.

It goes in phases for me. A period of frantic activity when i get loads done and love it. Then i crash and have a period of severe inactivity. Seems to happen in a few other areas of my life too.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. I still like to look and sometimes i end up buying for old times sake, but I’m so happy with what I have, it doesn’t get used, Even my vinyl reticence has the same logic behind it, my CD sound is better than ever, so i took a Xerxes (my fave) to get me motivated to set up a deck. I couldn’t even be arsed with an Orbe.

Up to a degree, being a reviewer can take away the simple pleasure of listening to your own system. Putting some exotic priced components into your own system can dull that pleasure, especially so when something really does ring your bells sits perfectly and it has to depart back to where it came from at the end of the review. On the plus side of course you come across a component that you simply MUST have and would sell your soul and conjugal rights to keep it, but those instances become rarer as you become accustomed to the performance of some very expensive kit, then it takes something rather special to rekindle that fire. That fire was lit last year when the Quadral speakers landed and they are very special because they are not going anywhere because of their sound which has utterly captivated me.
For the last 2 months I have been refurbishing the kitchen and my listening room is literally full of tools and materials, but still managed to have a brief listening sesh every night. Now the kitchen is finished I will clear all the tools out and I will be able to change the CD because all the tools on the floor meant I could get not near the system rack or the music racks LOL

I've got a mate coming up from the smoke next week which means I have to clear out the spare room so he has somewhere to kip. Been putting it off for weeks. Would carry on putting it off too except time has now run out. Usually find I can only do stuff like that at the last minute and when I absolutely have to.

I seem to remember some tall slim ones that looked expensive but were ridiculously cheap.

I've lived alone for 20 years so might be interesting. But he's mainly here because his mother's on her last legs so I don't think I'll see that much of him. He's got nowhere else to stay and he can't afford an hotel so not much option. Known the bloke 30 years almost and I did lodge with him for a month before I moved into this house so not like we are strangers. He's quite fastidious though so it might work out a bit like 'The Odd Couple' with me as Walter Matthau.

I think that pair have been on ebay for quite a while with no takers because the name is unfamiliar to most people. For some reason they go gaga for B&W, KEF, Mission and Wharfedale, yet the Quadrals wee all over those easily. Look at the specs on the back of them and these are at the bottom of the Quadral lineup:

Might work out quite well if he’s happy to muck in with chores and tidying, is he a hifi enthusiast?

Kinda makes me wish I’d had that new pair back then.

I don't think I will see much of him but we are going to do some metal detecting though on the possible site of a Roman road.

Meanwhile back on topic . . . . . . . .
I will admit to being a fat arse lazy bugger these days as I wouldn't dream of anything without a remote control.
Have a Pioneer PL12D sat on top of my rack and it never gets used because I have to lug my butt over to it every few minutes to skip tracks, turn the LP over, blow fluff off the stylus and a few other physical exertions that require more effort than reward for me personally. Methinks it will be for sale soon.

Sorry to tell you this Macca, living on your own for twenty years you've probably got yourself into quite a rut. I know someone who has lived on his own for longer than that and he finds it very difficult to have anyone around for more than a couple of hours. The main thing is to relax and enjoy meeting up/going out with an old friend.

Apart from a brief period when we owned a house and before we had children, I've never been much arsed about tinkering or comparative listening. Now I've got two systems I'm completely happy with, I've stopped even wondering about how they could be improved on. (Which is ironic as I now have the funds to upgrade if I wanted to).
