It’s a serious question. The way vintage hifi has climbed, anyone buying the right items a few years ago would have made far more than if they kept their money in a bank. Probably more than stocks and shares unless they got lucky.
Is it a good bet to invest in then, and what would be your tips for future money makers?
i would say that if you have room, Chrome Bumper Naim, Linn Isobariks, Linn Kans, Epos ES14s, most top flight turntables of the 80s, Garrard 301 and 401, Goldring Lencos, Most tonearms, Sugden A21a, early Krell and ARC, and any small and quirky Brit amps from the 80s would be my best bets. It has to be more fun than keeping your cash in a bank at 0.1% interest!

Never thought about that, but I would say yes. I'm sure some of the items you have mentioned will more than keep up with the rise in the cost of living and give you the enjoyment of trying some different gear if that is your thing. Now, can anyone think of a certain member this may suit?

I think you're right. It wasn't that long ago that Ittoks were selling fir £200 used and Aros fir £450. Ls3/5as used to be £200 ish too.
The art is in predicting the items that will rise. Kans and ES14s are a no brainer, so is Farlowe Exposure, CB Naim, Onix OA21, Myst Tma3 and pretty much anything does honed by Colin Wonfor.
Musical Fidelity A1 will also be a good investment but their heat/reliability issues might add to any risk of keeping them dat fir a while and then expecting them to work. I would say the same for the 1980s Audio innovations amps too.
Great thread BTW.

When I first got internet savvy twenty years ago, the stuff above was still being given away almost and Garrard 301's and valve Quads were still being junked here and there. My pal HiFi Dave rues the days when we should have collected loads of gear as investment - GL75's by the bucketload, old Quads and Garrard 301's and so on. Naims have always been expensive, but being able to increase prices every year automatically hasn't hurt residuals of older stuff at all. I bet the regularly changing streaming stuff won't so as well though. two preamps I sold a couple of years ago both went for rather more than I paid for them, so I shouldn't complain.

Even if we had just bought a few kilometres of NAC A5, we would all be rich!

I don't think it cost a huge amount more from the factory than Cable Talk 3.1 which at the time was £2.50 a metre and made with same grade of copper (the A5 is 19 strands at 2.5mm where the CT 3.1 and current Talk 3 is 42 strands at 2.5mm)

The prices people, are asking used for 20 year-old cable with the lettering worn off makes me laugh too. I don't particularly like the stuff either. I much prefer K20 and I have compared them many times in lots of systems. Only once did A5 sound OK to me.

I have 2 x 7m runs of NACA4 somewhere... Probably still connected to my MKI Kans and my Myst TMA3. I'm rich I tell ya, rich....

I have made money on every single item of Naim Audio I've owned people just love it but to be fair though overpriced it's excellent quality build wise and some of it sounds pretty good too. Funnily enough the only bit of Naim gear I own now is a tatty 5 metre pair of Nac A5.

Same here, my LP12, the Myst and Linn Kans. To be fair my first was Trio KD1033B, Hitachi HA250 and Castle Richmonds but the LP12 was my first big boy’s setup 😀

This is the precise argument I use with the missus with my vinyl purchases. I can point to the value they've added, particularly with my earlier Nautilus and Mofi pressings. So, everytime I make a vinyl purchase, I'm actually 'making an investment for our future'.
So, this leads to two prime factors:
(1) Thank God for Discogs and the Record Collector Rare Record Value Guide. (2) Some women are just plain fucking stupid.
