Back in the 80s I compared my trusty ported 15 litre Castle Richmonds with 5" mid/bass driver to some sealed about 40 litre Leak 600s with a 15" driver, which I got with a few other bits. I thought: 15" driver - wadds of bass. Gotta be... Gotta be...
Well, comparing the two, I found the Richmonds actually went lower and did a better job of presenting bass information. Must admit I was a bit disappointed. Some years later I got some Goodmans Axiom 10 (8") in cabinets about 35 litres. Again, the Castles did a better job with bass rendition.
Must admit, both experiences put me off larger speakers. I do have a pair of Magneplaner MG-IIIBs with with shredded ribbon tweeters which do have a "big sound" about them. Despite that, it hasn't put me off smaller bookshelf designs. Listening to a mate's Mordaunt Short Carnivals 3 years ago, I was we quite surprised at the scale of sound they could produce. Hearing Pink Floyd's "Time", one could be forgiven for thinking there was a real grandfather clock in the room. And I'm not sure if I could live with a big pair of speakers. Now and again I've fancied trying Quad 57s. But they just look too big for a room about 4x4.
Do like the presentation this bloke gives in these two vids:
Not a new idea, really. Yamaha were doing it in the late 60s.

Re the Leak 600 I noticed Beobloke mentioned that when he replaced the bell-wire and tags inside his 3030s with proper thick cable and solder he got a lot more bass out of them.
Then again size of bass driver is no guarantee of deep bass. Plenty of speakers using twelves and fifteens that roll off early in the bass. All the classic standmount JBLs pretty much, and all the various clones of them. I think even the nS1000M only manages 45Hz flat and that's with a tail wind and a solid wall right behind them.
Also if there is enough of a bump up in the lower mids people can think that is 'bass' - e.g in the KEF LS50.

You need a bigger box than most Tannoy/JBLs to get the full range from them. My cheviots supposedly need a box twice the factory size, but they would be even less SWMBO friendly then.

Not sure that's right. No doubt bigger is likely to be better, but my Cheviot Mk.II's put out a perfectly audible 30Hz without any bother. No doubt that's entering the roll-off region, but it's there. How deep do you need to go?

Have you had your's fettled Geoff (again, Paul reckons the port tube can be tuned very successfully to improve and extend the bass) ?

I fitted new cone surrounds (properly) and a checked the wiring and crossovers, removing a couple of spade connectors and soldering instead. I did a complete cabinet renovation as they were pretty battered and the plinths were damaged. Look like new now. I think the port tuning is about right on mine. You can't usefully tune them lower, but they can be tuned higher to gain a bit of bass amplitude at the expense of a little extension. The Cheviots are not my only Tannoys. I have another pair which I intend to recone and use the drivers in a unique project when I get around to it.
