Don't get too excited, I'm only taking about hifi
It hit me today that I carry round certain old and ingrained thoughts and feelings about certain brands that no longer hold true. Perhaps they never did.
For instance, I have often said I don't like Michell products, but what is this based on? Hearing the old Gyro in Vickers hifi in 1987, hearing it again in the late 80s on the shop floor in another dealers. Oh and playing for 10 minutes with a Hydraulic Reference Which we took in when I worked for a dealer.
That's the equivalent of saying I don't like Naim because I heard a NAC12 as NAP22 in a shop thirty years ago.
The irony is that I have owned and loved a Michell Iso for many years. It's seen off many others. I "justified" this by saying to myself that it's really a Tom Evans design. But would it ever have reached the market if not for Michell.
I also recently had an Orbe which was beautiful and so nicely engineered. I took a flight and handed it to a mate who loves it. It had sat unused for a couple of months because I was too lazy and too blinkered to set it up. He had it running in an hour......and he works long hours whilst I do nothing of value all day long.
I will now view Michell in a very different light and I admit that my old view of them was flawed. The question is, how many other prejudices, both favourable and unfavourable do I still erroneously hold. I will still use my eyes and ears to judge the sound and build of a product, but I will place far less credence on the name badge it wears form now on..
