I know I’m in the minority these days, but I wouldn’t have Jap separates. I’ve had a few CD players and never liked a single one. Same goes for the amps and speakers I’ve heard. I have heard one good turntable but it was so ugly it had to go.
I have liked a few Jap cartridges but that’s about it for me. I know there are a growing number of Jap hifi fans. Just wondering if anyone else fails to see the attraction?

Never had a problem, great build quality, last for ages and ages. Now as to sound, most of the affordable stuff was for the mass consumer market so you get what you pay for average, but then I always considered the NAD 3020 about average. A friend scored some high end Hitachi 8500 kit the other day. A pre and two of the power amps and they sound as good as it gets. The Luxman high end stuff (Before Alpine stuffed up the brand), was very very good, as was anything high end from Sony Kenwood, Pioneer, JVC, Teac, and not forgetting Accuphase etc. I have a so called highly rated Kenwood KA 7100 which I have just cosmetically restored and had checked out, and my Line Magnetic 211IA is so much better it is embarrassing on my better speakers on my average speakers toss a coin. So as always I guess it all depends on where you are coming from. Nowt wrong with the JAP DD decks most of them perform very well, even ignoring the peanuts price, and they are hassle free.

I think on the whole the japs do the best CD players. British Cd players are not really British anyway. They buy it all in from the Japs and at best they tweak it a bit.
Speakers - not really heard enough of them in controlled circumstances (i.e where I knew that the rest of the system was up to par) to be an overall judge although do like the look of the big Diatone speakers that we never see over here.
Amps - good build quality and good reliability but definitely a mixed bag. A lot of them sound a bit veiled, albeit 'clean'. Had a Sony TAN50ES power amp at one point, it was workmanlike but nothing to write home about. Heard a couple of Luxmans that were a cut above - including one of their latest jobs. Not heard many - if any - of the Jap flagship amps from late 70s/early 80s but would like to. Not many people seem to own them in the UK. Or they did and found something better.
The original Denon PMA250 UKSE is one to look out for. Probably would still be using that 25 years on except it developed a fault so I flogged it. The later marks are not a patch, much more veiled.
Had a load of Sony's, Teacs, and Trios, at one time about 25 years ago when I was buying and selling hi-fi for fun and profit. Some of them were quite expensive when new. None of them were preferable to a Cambridge Audio P70 - although I don't know that if I went back and did the comparison again I would come to a different conclusion there.

Westie:
Im the reverse i would never touch another British amp with a barge pole.. A lot of junk Japanese amps but their is a lot of good ones.. I use a 1980s Technics 'SU-V4X' amp in one system & a 1970's Trio 'KA2002' in another. However i would never use Japanese Speakers.
