It's pretty well all over now,but seeing as nobody else has posted about it, it seems to have been a goodly success and a wonderful get together for audio hobbyists 'of a certain age' to chew the fat.
Lord I miss all this. Not sure I have the stamina let alone inclination these days, as when I did help exhibit at two Bristol shows, I was knackered after (loads to drink on the Saturday night, but no hangover until the Monday - go figure  ). Some gear looked amazing and some a load of 'Dangerous DIY.' Huge Quads in a tiny room and even a pair of Spendor BC1's ffs (the grilles look better than my visually identical BC2's do) which look so damned old fashioned now. |

I can only go off pics and reports of what was there but it wouldn’t have motivated me to travel any distance, Go back to the Heathrow shows ofbthn80s and 90s and I’d be there, By comparison this show just didn’t raise my interest.

These shows have a lot of forum peeps showing their stereo's off rather than manufacturers touting for business. In a former life I'd love to have gone. Thankfully, I have an annual show just down the road from me currently, I can meet some old friends there and if the last two are anything to go by, I can be reminded as to what a seriously good stereo sounds like.

Real world systems, genuine enthusiasts, a smattering of quality vintage and DIY, community spirit (mainly single malt), money raised for a good cause.

This kind of show could give someone a real direction of what sound they were looking for. Where else can you get access to that much equipment in one day.
Have to say, from the picture, Audio Al has an interesting looking turntable and the NVA amplifiers look tremendous! I really like the styling.
Someone had a massive Sony amplifier, that's one thing I'd have visited for. Can't remember the model name but I'd love one.

So long as you can avoid bass boom you should still get a good sound tone-wise. It's been my experience that you can plonk a system with good tone down anywhere and it will still keep that quality. Soundstage and so on maybe less so. But what can you do, that's modern UK hotel rooms. They're just slightly too small. Although some of the rooms at the old Scalford location were even smaller - the ones on the top floor.
Looks like it was a good show and a good turnout.

I found it a bit sad after Scalford. Not many rooms and I miss the maze layout. That said it was nice to meet some mates again and hear some unusual kit and music. I’d want a lot more rooms (maybe use the second floor?) to travel and pay entry next year.
Best sound for me was Knipester with some DD actives and lovely woodworking skills. But kudos to Harv for playing mad drum and bass at proper volume and it sounding pretty good in a small room.
The NVA kit looked fantastic but for me it didn’t work too well in the room, but a lot of systems suffered like that.
It would be a shame if it died completely though, it’s a unique and very slightly mad show

Scalford had too many rooms though, it was practically impossible to visit all of them and have a decent listen in more than a handful. And the maze layout didn't help with that. I remember thinking I'd done it all and was going to go back to a couple of rooms and then I saw some people coming through a door and it turned out to be another entire wing of rooms!
A while later I saw more people coming out of what I thought was a cupboard where they kept the hoovers and it was the entrance to a staircase up to the second floor. About another ten rooms!
It did add a bit of charm to the whole thing though.
I think they had a good enough turnout of visitors this time to do it again.

I think it’d have been worth £5, maybe £10 but £15 was a bit steep.
I agree scalford was too big to visit everything,
That Goldilocks setup isn’t there just yet... hopefully it’ll be better next year and keep improving

I would have had train fair, two nights in the hotel and the entrance fee. Add a bit of food and booze and it's a £200 jolly. Still I might make the effort next year, I like that you can stay in the hotel where the show is happening. If I'm getting the train I don't want to have to do it there and back in the same day and I don't like getting the train on Sundays.

The hotel is mega grotty but most rooms sounded decent, a few really lit my candle. The 57's being played loud, WTAF? That sounded mega. Hari's room with big Focals and Advantage amps was kicking out the D&B and nu-jazz, very much my thing. I thought NVA got a good sound from their bigger speakers, i'm not a fan of the small ones, but the bigguns really work.
Stuff I forgot to go back for, headphones and that Sony TAN amp.
Weirdest thing- the guy with the Sony quadrophonic set-up. Goddam he couldn't leave a song on for more than 30 seconds without touching a switch. Just weird.

I'm seriously considering hunting down one of those Sony's. They are everthing I love about vintage Japanese hifi. Absolutely unbelievable build quality and about a transparent as it gets for that time. Im pretty sure it has lower distortion than the Krell. A stunner. |
