Any opinions guys, never heard one, there is one for sale on our local forum----again, this thing is being passed around more than my mates Ex. Must be something wrong, have not seen this since they passed around some old Phase Linear smoke machines some years back.

Both my Monarchy Audio DACs are ladder types and I wouldn't swap them for anything else.

DAC chips were originally ladder types, with monolithic laser trimmed resistors on chip. No one makes these integrated chip devices any more so many brands no make them from discrete resistors. The issue with them is that you need mega precision to keep the linearity of the conversion, precision of the order of 0.002% is required to get 20 bit accuracy, so as you can imagine ladder dacs made from through hole parts have their own issues. Of course many believe it's the purest form of conversion and that they don't suffer from the ills of monolithic chip devices. Though they tend not to be too keen to explain and show measurements for these supposed ills.
They do sound different though.

Sounds very similar to how a light speed attenuator is built with all the difficulties of matching LED's vs resistors. Or have I got it wrong.

AIUI, which is poorly at best, George's pre-amp requires a lot of matching to ensure it runs in a linear fashion. Nowt wrong with that though in and of itself.
