I have discovered today that is no such thing as a "standard" kitchen unit.
My missus wants a new kitchen but that will cost an arm and a leg, so my compromise is to replace the doors, drawer fronts and worktops. so at least she gets a new look to the kitchen.
A mate of mine said he has a whole heap of door fronts going spare so I drive over to his place to find that only 2 doors would actually fit, even then they were a centimetre too short.
From there I went to B&Q and not a single one of their doors or drawer fronts would fit any of my units.
My only option now is to buy a whole new kitchen or find someone who is stripping out their old one and I can find what I need from amongst it. Some hope.

Couldn't you take the existing doors off and re-furbish them? Or are they just chipboard?

Just found out that they do specialist paint for laminate surfaces.

Get the paint brush out and you'll be able to afford a lovely granite worktop.

I had the local kitchen expert round to give me an idea how much a new set of doors, drawer fronts and worktops would cost. Nearly had another heart attack when he told me the price
Decided to paint the units, fit new handles and do a nifty tiling job just to pep up the look of the place.
This is what I started with which was very dated looking:
This is what it looks like now:

Well they look better. Why are the tiles so high?

Besides, I think it looks better that way than only half way up the wall and shows the pattern up better too.

They would have looked better lower. The Extractor is too high by the looks of it. Electric Hob. to under extractor 650mm Gas Hob to under Extractor 750mm

Electric Hob. to under extractor 650mm Gas Hob to under Extractor 750mm The old tiles were lower, but her "browning" made the wall brown and greasy too The previous extractor was lower but we kept banging our heads on it and Hotpoint insisted it was a certain height above the cooker otherwise the fitter wouldn't install the cooker. Nanny state gets everywhere these days.

Well that's freshened the kitchen up. Sure has and I am pleased with the result, given that it cost a fraction of the £3k I was quoted by the kitchen specialist.
Mind you, it was bloody hard work given that my health is crap and lugging heavy worktops around was a real strain for me. The best bit was getting the worktops cut and ready for fitting and the guys at Savoy Timber did a great job of cutting the boards down to the exact size I wanted and delivered them very quickly with no damage at all. Great prices too I might add.

And while I am on the subject of the nanny state, the cooker we have now was not our first choice but was effectively forced on us. We wanted a hotpoint HUG61G finished in grey but as our gas supply is LPG then it was deemed to be unsafe to convert the cooker for LPG because of the automatic ignition. It was delivered, I bought the jets to fit but was told they could not be fitted because of new regulations. Gas + spark = flame is my rudimentary knowledge of these things but obviously some expert knows better.
The Hotpoint was taken away and had to have a cooker that was LPG convertible and this Indesit was chosen for that reason alone. It is a horrible thing to use, it is in black not grey, with a special deflector plate having to be put into the top oven when we want to use the grill, there is a cheap cross shaped plate to fit when we use a small pan which is bad design plus the bars over the top burners are very slippery and a couple of times the saucepans have actually slid off. So much for health and safety.

The same nanny state that wanted us all driving diesels because it was better for the environment. That worked out well didn't it? Every third child now has asthma.
or telling everyone to stop eating fat because its bad for you. And now we have half the country on anti-depressants.
We've had enough of 'experts'.
