There is definitely a revived interest in reel to reel recorders. God knows why, I had a few first time around in the seventies and they were expensive to buy and use, troublesome and fiddly. The sound quality was good though, well only as good as what you were recording or what was on the fairly limited range of pre-recorded tapes available. Not a road I'd go down again, that's for sure. Interesting article here: www.theverge.com/2015/10/5/9409563/reel-to-reel-tape-retro-audio-trend

I like the idea of using unmolested media that R2R gives you but not at the price they command.
It's just too much money and you'll never get any newer (90s onwards) Music on a tape in the same way the older stuff was done.
If you can afford it, I am sure it's the best way to listen.

Tape is only as good as the material recorded, so unless you have access to original studio recordings and stuff of similar quality or record live music, you're stuck, making the whole idea pretty redundant. For many, I think it's just another 'fancy toy'.

I still, remember my first hearing of R2R in JG Windows Newcastle. It sounded real. I will probably never own one, but if I did, I’d want a Revox.

Copied from the master tape. Deep pockets required though. Like Kola Borehole deep. Yes, and you thought vinyl had got quite spendy of late!

More expensive than I thought, and it looks like they only have about 20 tapes, and nothing that I would buy.

Yeah there's not that much, there is some Creedence and John Lee Hooker though.

Have a Tandberg TD20A and a Pioneer RT 909. The Pioneer is worth having just to look at, though it does make good recordings it’s not as good as the Tandberg which is a superb machine. I used mine mostly for recording gigs shown on Sky Arts HD and the like- stuff that’s not available to buy on vinyl or cd. Some of these, particularly the acoustic stuff have fantastic SQ and it’s still the best I’ve heard from any source in my system.

The recordings from other media that I make on my Pioneer MiniDisc deck aren't too shabby. I've not made any live music recordings, but I'd expect them to be very good indeed.
