The monarchy thread set me thinking about this. Patriotism, country, royalty etc seem to be a bit of a divide amongst the population. My only real experience of the possibility came with the Falklands war when The Sun ran a story about call-up papers being printed. It never happened but I know my response was that I’d rather go to prison than go to fight. That was borne simply from a desire not to get killed.
I’m not really patriotic. Lots of things about Britain I like and admire. Some things I dislike. None of them would make me put my life on the line. As I get older, I am less likely to ever face the prospect of fighting in a war, but these days I reckon I’d do it if the cash was there, I reckon it would take £250k a year for me to risk it. I’m not thrilled about the thought of killing other soldiers but if the cash was there I’d do it.
Anyone else who would feel a sense of duty? Any pacifists? Any mercenaries like me? Anyone just not interested in risking getting killed at any price

Thing is, what exactly (or whom to be more precise) would you be fighting for ? Cannon fodder for the rich and influential.
Need to put on Sabbath war pigs...………………………………………………..

It's a bloody good job Britain weren't relying on the likes Westie and Stu when the Nazi's were knocking at our door. For me, I'm too old now but I'm sure had there been an occasion, yes I would have fought for this country.

Depends on whose war it is, what kind of war it is and why it's being fought.
I wouldn't be a good candidate for the armed forces anyway, I don't take orders.
I'd have no problem living with killing in self defence though.

I have lived through a war, the Rhodesian bush war, a total waste of time, trying to ward off the inevitable. No friggen way will I fight a war to preserve the lackey scum politicians, and their evil military industrial complex paymaster's agenda. The only wars that are justified are invasions of your home land. I would have fought in the Second World War because of what those Axis bastards did, they had to be defeated.

Never been in the forces but have been under fire twice. Worse than being in the army really since at least they can shoot back.
Do know quite a few veterans though, none of them seem to have any regrets about serving. Only a few were actually in the line of fire. One bloke who was in the Falklands said he was only under fire once and that was his own side shooting at him by mistake.

I was not referring to the last world war, cos my view would have changed if it would have been back then, but that was a real world war not some load of crap waste of Lives & money...

Although with the attitude of Europe towards us now we probably would have been better off not getting involved in it at all and just leaving them to the tender mercy of the Nazis. Amazing how quickly that's all forgotten. The reality is they owe this country a debt they can never repay.

Last war? Falklands was the one I'd have been involved with had conscription been announced (it was discussed I recall).

There was never any danger of anyone being conscripted for the Falklands.
They didn't have enough boats to ship all of the regular army down there, let alone a load of conscripts.
I was told by a journalist that the conscription papers were printed for the 1st Gulf War in 1990 but I somehow doubt that was true.

Our armed forces have been pared down to the point that we simply don't have the resources. You see this repeated time and time again, it isn't in the slightest bit true.
Military tech has moved on a lot in the 40 years since the Falklands, you can do a lot more with a lot less now.
As far as the Falkands specifically is concerned, the garrison is now much larger and has air support, and there is a proper runway enabling airborne reinforcement within 12 hours. On the flip side Argentinian military capability has actually deteriorated significantly in the last 40 years, they no longer have the ability to mount any sort of air defence of the islands, even if they were able to capture them again.

If we hadn't got involved, we would, at best, have had to sign a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany, making us complicit in some very bad things, and possibly Hitler's next target once he'd knocked out the Soviets. And I think the debt of gratitude is at least as much to the USA as to ourselves. We held out against the Axis powers, but we would have had zero hope of liberating continental Europe without US assistance.

But Hitler was all for it, if we'd wanted to we could have stitched them up big time.
