The iconic Pioneer PL-12D. The first serious deck for many, a sigificant step up from the clanky, plasticky BSR's and cheaper Garrards that many started out with back then. I bought this one a year or two ago, good little TT that still sounds very decent even today.

We gave £10 or £15 fir it so I was a bit gobsmacked at the sound.

I recall him talking at length of the fragility, iffy tracking and temperamental performance. For all those foibles he still felt they we worth it. If you couldn’t tolerate a Decca, he used to recommend the Dynavector 17D2.

Found these lonely little guys hiding in the dark, just dying for a plinth to live in. Connoisseur BD1 and Jelco SA-5.

I like chopping and changing gear and generally playing around with it. My interest is not just the music, but in the hardware too. I use the stuff that's in one piece and do build equipment when it suits from my stock of components. Built over fifty pairs of speakers in the past, mostly decent but the odd horror has happened.

My Hi-Fi knowledge only really starts from the 1980s. You will have loads of experience of things that are beyond my horizon. I’ve been never really gone back to try earlier kit and that’s largely because of a lack of knowledge.

Actually, there are two. How good are they? Better than a Rega 3, say?

How good are they? Better than a Rega 3, say? I've compared them. I prefer the BD1, it has a bit more solidity to the sound. Here's the last one I put together a few years ago. In hammered charcoal finish.

I haven’t inspected one closely but they so look well built. They used to sell for peanuts but prices are steadily rising. That’s a very neat piece of work.

The old felt mat is not doing the looks any favours, it was only on there as a try-out. I actually sold my Garrard 401 with Ittok after building this 'cos I preferred it.

Yep me too. I've got a few vintage pieces I bought just for the fun of it, never intended to be used for best sound quality. I just like hi-fi equipment. That's what this forum is about isn't it?

Another scarce item. VTL Deluxe, valve pre-amp. Lovely sounding bit of kit with the best built in MM phono stage I've heard.

That’s quite something to have tucked away. For many, it would be their pride and joy. There can’t have been many made, so the chances of finding one at all would be slim. Finding a nice one like yours would probably mean........buying yours!

Couple of TVC's. Promitheus. Very nice sounding unit. Works great with Quad power amps. Ming Da MC-9. Amazing sound quality. Best pre-amp I've used.

Seventies Cambridge Audio P80 integrated amp. Quite rare and bit of a classic, with very good sound quality.

Seventies Cambridge Audio P80 integrated amp. Quite rare and bit of a classic, with very good sound quality. I heard one of these in the 80s. It was really good. We took it in pc and one channel was down. Once fixed it really sounded like it should cost a lot more.

Not heard of that one. Which means it either didn't make it into production or sold very few, I'm familiar with most Hi-Fi from back then.
