I agree there are no absolutes and what You think sounds awful I might think sounds good. Disagree that it is at all difficult to write a review of hi-fi equipment. it's a bit harder if you want it to be entertaining, and almost impossible if you want it to be genuinely useful. I don't know what your reviews were like, I'm just going by the vast bulk of reviews that indicate to me that it's an easy way to pick up some pin money. Big words Martin, so go ahead and write a review

Easy peasie......just lob in some inky blackness, humungus soundstage, the treble must be high the bass low and the mids in the middle.
Job done.

Would you like David Price style present tense, Ken Kessler style with lots of watch references or Roy Gregory style with loads of bullshit?

Has anyone else, bought many mags this Year? After those two I bought one more but it still left me wanting. I may wel re-collect the 80s mags one day. Far more interesting to me,

I've still got some copies of HFR from 1989/1990
It was a good read despite all the Linn/Naim stuff. They did review loads of other gear too. People forget that or don't want to remember.

I use to have a pile of hi-fi mags about five feet high, quite handy to refer back to past reviews when something reasonable for a lower price came up for sale. Now just keep a few including old copies of hi-fi choice annuals.
Trouble is that the same reviewers get to handle the same SME always Kessler for example. Roksan was always with the other yank reviewer

I've got about 15 years of Hi-fi World here but they are not much use as a reference as there is no index. I might recall them reviewing an amp or speaker that I am thinking about buying but how long ago did they do that?
Maybe I can narrow it down to a 3 or 4 year period but that is still a lot of mags to search through to find the review. Even then I'm only interested in the spec and maybe the price, I don't put much stock in the actual 'review' part.
I'm really only keeping them in case I am at a loose end when I retire, should give me a couple of weeks of reading material at least.

Only if you are buying new, I've never boxed swapped with new gear. I'm not bleeding Rockefeller.
I see they say that you have had four Linn LP12s Rudy? Is that true?

When I was truly happy with my audio kit, there was decent vintage stuff being given away that I didn't have the space for and other good gear with normal operating-life faults being skipped as it was deemed to costly to service (most service centres have a minimum charge). Ten years or so ago, eBay kicked in big-time and prices started to climb, even on the tat that's out there.

yep all used except me first one. then bought used ones...sold at no loss..like u i bought used kit mostly.. The older ones were better IMO. They had the groove. I think that was what everyone liked about it and why it got the rep that it did. Then someone decided that turntables had to sound more accurate instead of just 'good', they improved it, but it still isn't up with the most accurate at anywhere near the £14K they want for it so it is neither fish nor fowl now. Had some great times listening to my mates hand-me down-one back in 1990/ '91. Really good for rock because for whatever reason it imparted that bit of phatness in the bass, so the foundation and the rhythm stuck out just a little. but it could do the delicacy pretty well too. It was composed, but it rocked. The new one just wants to sound like a cd player and fails.

tbh the golden days of kit for normal people are over...to buy home grown kit nowadays costs a fortune..
