It’s a lifetime purchase so it makes good sense ro get what you ant now. If I ever park my backside in one place and decide to stay there, I’d like to buy a final turntable. I currently have no idea what that would be but I look forward to finding out.

I honestly thing decks like the SP10 are totally dependent on the bloody bits of black plastic you play on them. I loved the press to play kind of aspect of the drive with no messing around otherwise.
Westie, to pick up on something discussed a few posts ago, I agree the Orbe is totally better than any Gyro I've ever heard, but I think the Dias is better and possibly the cheaper Hyperspace too. After years conditioned to the Linn/Thorens piston suspension ideal, the swimmy wobbly Michell tuning doesn't sit right with me I'm afraid.

Yer SME looks too high at the back - the pipe is tapered. Set an OC9 too high and it'll take fillings out. To run an OC9 in - Play at 1.7g for a few LP's before dropping back to 1.5g. At least that's how we did it.....

alright dave i tried the arm height at loads of different vta settings. easy on the sme..oc9 was harsh no matter what..i know how to set a cartridge and arm .dead easy using the sme protractor. vta i always do by ear..forget what they say..tbh i seem to prefer the arm higher at the bearing end ..have it that way with the dl304
dave what you think of the dl304

I did have 5 turntables until last year. Gave away a Sony direct drive and sold a Technics SL6. Going to sell those two in the picture too. I think I've given away some of those amplifiers as well since I took that picture. Need to clear out some space so I've got the room to get some new kit in.

They look really well made. Still can be had at a good price too. Toshiba SR-370 to be exact. I have two. They are very well made and pretty hefty, probably half as heavy again as the Technics SL-1200/1210. The sound quality is excellent and it's the best match with the Mission 774 that I've come across. The pairing is a bit of a magic combination. And yes, prices are very attractive. They're a bit of a sleeper..........so far!

Regarding Japanese solid plinth decks. Just site them well and make sure they don't play bass tunes through the speakers if lightly tapped. The Sansui SR717 - another one bought purely for its low W&F figures - had a taut metallic drum skin for a plinth - far worse through the speakers if tapped than any Rega - and siting was crucial if bass reproduction wasn't to be severely affected...
Rudi - I said V15 V. the 'V' bit is all important here as it was the best of them all. I reserve judgement on the stock Techie 1200mk2 models - too 'one note thumpy' for me, but I've never used one of these here, only it's ancestor SL150/1500 which took some prep to sound any good (excellent when it did in fairness).

One day I’d like a deck with a linear tracking arm.
