I'd like that, but as always, the chances of a turntable arriving undamaged are only 50/50. I know from experience.

Yes it is a lottery especially if you have the “perfect storm” of arm, Cartridge, lid, sprung subchassis and sub/outer platter. So many potential pitfalls. I’ve had some shockingly bad packing jobs that have survived and also some pretty good ones that have fallen foul of vandal couriers. My mate had a Pink Triangle sent to him wrapped only in brown paper!

I picked up an eBay bargain which arrived yesterday, although I’m not sure what I will do with it. What did I buy? A box of 16 bass units. These to be precise. They are SEAS prestige P14 RC, a variant of the ones unused by Proac and Harbeth. All 16;cost me a total,of £86! They are 16 ohm so they lend themselves to being used in a pair driven parallel. Very tempted to use 4 in a Shahinian Arc type cabinet with a nice tweeter. Might never happen, but I’m very happy with my slightly offbeat impulse buy.

If you look at the Usher S520 you will see that the main driver is a version of these with a clear cone. Being 16 ohm you could have a bit of fun making a mini Isobarik system, rolling off the secondary driver with an inductor. Or using a pair in a folded horn, driver sensitivity will be low, so this could be a decent option to gain a bit of 'wellie'.

I like the Isobariks option. If anyone has a project and needs cheap drivers, I’m not greedy. They are welcome to share in the bargain.

I'd be a bit wary though. It's a trade sale and if it was an economic fix they'd probably have done it to sell at full price. I bet they've had the lid off and know what's wrong with it. Would need to be pretty cheap I think.

I’d bid £400 and take to Jez Arkless. I’d bet me could not only fettle but improve it.

Would be the last person I'd take any of my equipment to for repair. I think Walpurgis has hit the nail on the head regarding economic fix.

I guess it helps if you’ve met the guy. He’s a genuinely nice fella and really intelligent too. I’ve given him a few things to fix and it’s always been quick, cheap and sorted in one. Same with mates. He also knows the big MF amps as well as anybody. I also have Maughan Amplifier Company up here. There’s nothing they can’t fix. The hardest part for me would be collecting the amp, or I’d have a go at it, Mind you, I’ve had no end of MF amp failures in my time, so maybe the distance is a good thing!
Maybe I’m being optimistic, but I often think repairers take an easy way out and say something is unfixable when they can’t simplly buy a new board and slot it in. My mate had a faulty monster Levinson (forget the model but remember the 70kg weight....I had to carry it for him!). He took it to back to the shop who sent it to ABsolute Sounds authorised repairer. It sat with them 6 months following an estimated £750 repair. The repairer declared it irreparable when he couldn’t get a replacement board. It went to Maghans who fixed it in a few days and charged £180.

I like Jez. He doesn't mince his words, but he's pleasant at the same time.

I'll bow to your greater knowledge about Jez in person, I just don't like his posting style, or the fact he took monies from customers and left them waiting. Yes, I know financial difficulties can happen, but this was not the way to deal with it.

Seems like an awful lot. Does anyone know what they should be worth? The drive unit cones look faded and tired, although they may well sound just fine and the cabinets need refinishing. Personally I reckon they are about £500 overpriced.

Well its Audio Gold in North London selling them. The land of overly priced equipment!

I had the same amp a few years back. One of the channels kept dropping out and it was a dry joint on the output relay. A real swine to get at too.

Aye. I said Newcastle as the seller mentions collection from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
Cramlington. Any idea what it was once famous (of sorts) for, Andrew?

Kinda known for being a sprawling housing district with nothing interesting. It was one of those “New Town” developments. It has a pretty good shopping centre/ retail park and a good powder coasters on it’s industrial estate, but that’s about as exciting as it gets

Sorry. I was mistaken; it was Washington, and I suppose you'd have no interest, but it was the Clan Crusader car, based on the Hillman Imp:
