Do you ever do Hi-Fi related searches and find your own old posts here and there and think 'did I really say that, it's bollocks'? I'm ashamed to say I do. I'm not saying what I've said is specifically inaccurate, but it has been questionable and to be quite frank deserving of the label, 'bollocks'. I must have thought I was right at the time though.

Yep me too. Mostly heaping praise on something I went cold on a few weeks later. The trouble is, you can get something you’ve had before and come to a completely different conclusion about it. Trouble is, you have no way of knowing whether your tastes/ears have changed, whether it’s just the pairing or room that made the difference, or whether it’s a sample variation. Having had a few Naim amps sat together as well Linn Kan’s I’m very aware that big sample differences are real.

It really, really gets me when I hear "And I say to you.....................". There's a couple who do it. Who the F#ck do they think they are, Churchill delivering a wartime morale booster? Utter tossers! Line 'em up and shoot 'em!! (twice, just to be sure )

The trouble is, you can get something you’ve had before and come to a completely different conclusion about it. Denon DL-103 cartridge is like that. I've had several, some sound pretty average and yet others really sing. Weird. Decca Londons can be like this too.

There's definitely an art to talking bollox, generally if you want to succeed in the modern world one must be fluid in bollocks, im surprised its not a subject at school.

We could start a course here for the most deserving.
I don't need to join, I'm fully qualified anyway.

I mostly stick to jokes. They still seem funny to me when I re-read them.

Of all the people out there talking bollocks about hi-fi I don't think you even register, it's a big field and the competition is very tough. I don't mind people talking bollocks as long as other people are allowed to put the alternative (i.e correct) point of view. That way at least anyone who knows nothing about the subjects can see both sides of the story and make their own mind up. Part of the problem is the mags were able to talk bollocks unchallenged for many years and so people picked it up from there and now they are very reluctant to change their belief system even though they can now access on line all the information they need to make an informed judgement. I don't like forums where people are not allowed to present the opposing arguments. Or get personally attacked if they do.

You re-read your own jokes? Not intentionally, but sometimes reading an old thread on a forum I see a humorous comment and think 'that's funny' then realise I was the person who wrote it. Which is just as well, since my technical knowledge is nil and I'm not much cop at describing how a system sounds.

There are definitely items out there that wouldn't suit my taste now and at the time I was quite complimentary. I think it shows the growth that comes with experimental journeys like HiFi.
It's nice to think that what I once liked, may not be as liked now as that shows progress and that I haven't sat still and got rigid in my thinking like some folk do.
Nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't expect everyone to follow the same path as you.

It's absurd, really; a bit like someone telling you what a great painting is like in terms of use of colour, perspective etc without you being able to see the painting. You need to see it to understand what they mean.

It is indeed, when you think about it, quite similar to those wine aficionados descriptions.
What always interested me was that some reviewers descriptions chimed with me, whilst others just irritated. I’m sure was the same for other readers and it probably bore little relation to whether or not our actual tastes aligned with the reviewer.
Jimmy Hughes and Malcom Steward always managed to engage and appeal, whereas Alvin Gold just spoke gibberish. And that’s before you even get to those twats who waste two thirds of the review telling you every nerdy detail about the recording, including label, venue, key, conductor etc etc etc.

That's why I don't read the reviews of something until after I've bought it and listened to it The faith some people put in reviews and reviewers makes me smile. A while ago now I was reading a thread about a particular bit of kit, one bloke had owned it, thought it was rubbish and said so. Another got really irate about this, he had not heard it himself but accused the owner of lying because the kit had been praised by 'Highly respected reviewers.' I think it's called 'charming naivety.'

They probably have as much credibility and accuracy as the front page of Tne Sun. Edit: I should have added that What Hifi deserves its own special mention. That rag’s reviews and 5 star ratings have less credibility than the front page of The Daily sport.

The whole process has about as much basis in reality as The Lord Of The Rings. I gave up when mags started reviewing mains cables, fuses and so on. Not only would they claim that there were obvious audible differences, they'd also draw comparison with other cables and fuses and even describe the differences in the sound between them, and the changes on the sound as they 'burn in' (always an improvement of course). Because, like, people can easily hear these differences, that's taken for granted.
I mean if I wanted to read fantasy I'd dig out some Michael Moorcock.

Their reviewing system mirrors the old Generation Game format where items are on a conveyor belt and the reviewer gets around 20 minutes of listening before the next component gets wheeled in, so none of it has had any running hours at all on it. I reviewed the Tannoy Mercury 7.4s and their full review description mirrors what I was hearing during only the first 10 hours or so.
