I bought one today. The Claymore was my first hifi crush when I saw a blue one in Sound Org’s window. I wanted to hear it when I bought my Epos but the shop said it would t drive them and steered me towards Onix.
A few years later, I got a Claymore 2. Tbh it didn’t float my boat, but it had a fault so maybe it wasn’t sounding as good as it should. I also only used it with Rogers LS7s which weren’t really that great either. Because it kept going off on one channel, and the Rogers weren’t as described, I on,y had the AIr a couple of days.
And so 31 years after I stood drooling on the pavement in Gillygate, I’m finally getting to play with a proper Claymore. I should, add that this was never about replacing my Campion. Nor even comparing. I’m past that sort of thing. I might keep for a second system though, or I might simply enjoy amd then seek to swap for another retro classic.
Will share my thoughts once ive had a play.

Not sure I've ever heard one but they've stuck around a long time so I suppose they are a classic. When does it arrive? I've got a bit of classic kit on the way to me but not going to say what until it gets here

Never tried one, but heard only good things about these. They seem well liked.

I really don’t know what to expect of the Claymore. I have no idea what sort of “sound” it has. Using Omni speakers is also another curve ball. I’m also not a fan of AB comparisons as they tend to emphasise differences. I will just listen to it. Might even dig our the Spicas if I can blag some stands.

Try a blind comparison, it's not easy to hear any differences then.

I’m not sure how that would work. I’d need my missus to do all the plugging and unplugging, which takes a bit of time, even if I thought she was up to it. I don’t think my auditory memory would be up to it either. Plus there’s also the issues of warm up and level matching. I think I wil just listen to it and see how much I enjoy the sessions. It’s apparentky had very limited use in a second system and one careful owner, so I’m hopeful it will be a good example. Pity it's black though,

I wasn't really being serious. But if you want to know how tiny the differences become when you don't have prior knowledge, try it sometime. It's scary how much our preconceptions influence what we think we hear.

I wasn't really being serious. But if you want to know how tiny the differences become when you don't have prior knowledge, try it sometime. It's scary how much our preconceptions influence what we think we hear. Cables are a good example and one I have tried blind. Speaker cables still show significant differences for me but interconnect ones are small and mains cables I’d bet money on not being able to identify in a blind test. Odd thing with speaker cables is that they never seem to be consistent and if you change kit or home, the last “winning” cable can be ousted by the one it replaced. That’s why I try to keep a few alternatives. A mate and I did a good blind test with Naim CD3.5 and CD5 on two identical inputs of an amp, both using Klotz AC110 interconnect. My missus switched inputs and we both preferred the 3.5 consistently. My mate then took over switching and my wife and I listened. Again I consistently picked the 3.5 but she (a big Naim fan) always picked the CD5. Differences were small but consistent.

I agree about keeping a few sets of speaker cables. I can think of a few times where I'd happily take a blind test even for money. Just depends on the source/amp/speaker balance. So I have six or seven different sets, it always seems to be horses for courses with speaker cable.
Interconnects are very hard to tell apart blind, even though there is no question there can be differences, and that's been demonstrated in proper double-blind studies where experienced listeners could tell them apart. Although you have to remember that they are not necessarily hearing differences in overall sound quality, but more likely have identified certain traits they can use to spot the difference. You can train yourself to pass a blind test. Assuming there is a real difference to begin with ofc.

I agree macca.
Funny why the big boys of hifi denounce Blind Testing and the wee lads say bring it on.

Ive got 4 different sets of speaker cables. Naca5, avondale blacklink, chord company something or other, LS6.
Favourite by a mile is the nva (on both diy nva amps and avondale) but then i dare not use any other in case the capacitance is too high and my nva diy amps go pop.

I used Chord Odyssey 2 with mine and it didn't go pop. Not that I'm encouraging any experimentation with that mind. I've got some LS5 and I usually prefer that to the others, not always though. Not sure how much longer we can keep up this small talk until the Claymore arrives...

The thicker the better is a simple rule of thumb. Except when it isn't ofc.
What's your DIY made of?

Grant over in AoS told me about this stuff quite some time back. I never got round to trying it as I lost the link. I have heard NVA speaker cables on a few occasions and have been impressed by them. Not sure what model they were though. Certainly did a great Job at the Penkridge Bakeoff and at Macca's the other week. I use Fisual S-FLEX currently and I think they were £2pm when I got them. Lots of copper for not a lot of money. If I keep one of the Muscle amps, it will be a lot cheaper to try a few speaker wires out. It's sat between the speakers now.

It will be nice to hear one of Colin’s designs properly too. I have huge respect for him and I’m sure the amp will be as good as others have found it. I’m being honest up front and saying I’m not parting with my Sonneteer stuff, but this dabble is really more for the experience. If I love it, I will simply keep it too. But I do want a Nait, and a Kraken, and a McIntosh, and a Scott, And an Accuphase...........
