Every once in a while I get completely pissed off with the size of my sound system. Happened recently whist tracking down the cause of mains hum through the speakers. Managed to sort that today (after days of ffing about) but when it doesn't go my way then the teddy is out the pram. Well, at one point is was going to bin the lot and start again with my little AP20, Cambridge Audio CD5, LS6, TIS and a pair of small diy semi omni speakers.
Ever since the hum got evicted I am no longer going to chuck it all in the bin but still hanker after something simple. Less space taken up, less to go wrong, cheaper (probably). There is something very satisfying about an amp, source and speakers. But then I have found out that (1) adding more psu gives me better music (2) multiple amps (one for each driver) does the same (3) I cant live with one source (miss LP) (4) getting distance between transformers and sensitive circuitry removes fog - often means larger boxes or psu remote from amp/source.
Some day I will get a grip.

You can never have enough boxes. Elegant simplicity is for boring bastards. A good system should be so Heath-Robinson that no-one else in the house would ever be able to work out how to switch it on.
Plus a couple of racks full of kit makes it look like you're taking it seriously. I've had a few visitors comment that my living room reminds them of a recording studio. I see it as a compliment.

Heath Robinson - you obviously have not seen my diy threads on hfs. No cases, wires everywhere and speakers made out of old ikea furniture.
Jammy, thats a healthy collection of boxes. Do you have to dust them ? Dare not dust mine without turning them off first or get the leaf blower out (and yes i have done that before).

Might be ironic coming from someone who has just increased their box count, but I prefer simple every time if you can get the same sound.
