A story/cautionary tale of not to get too excited at the prospect of something all shiny and new, as it can affect the brain into not thinking straight.... Ever made a fecking massive cockup? I did, and will embarrass myself by saying what it was... I got my new XLR cable a few hours ago, and duly fitted them, with some trouble as they are quite thick and unwieldy. so decided to test them to make sure they were ok, following so far? Now the BIG oops moment (I was just being in a rush and feeling a tad excited, thats my excuse anyway)... picked a favourite track in my Audirvana library, and waited to hear a delicious piano sound coming from my remaining Amphion speaker,But instead what I heard was a mushy sound, bass heavy. I looked at what may be the problem, the sound was just coming from the twin subs. there was NO speaker wire attached to the power amp or said speaker, arghhhhhhhhðŸ¤ðŸ¤ðŸ¤ Talk about speaker isolation, there was/is a massive air gap Who said "cable do not matter", they most certainly do

I connected speaker wires, left to right and right to left.
Only noticed when first and second violins were in the wrong place in the Orchestra!

Pete, you will not be the first or last to go through this
I can tell you a very funny story about Mick Parry, Naim's unofficial mouth piece for many years on the fish, hard core naimiee/blunderbuss owners and freemason of repute.
Back in the old days, when wheels were square and internet forums were a very new thing and dial up was king lol , the fish was run by Bub/Fox/AlexS and MickP.
Myself & Timpy were quite adversed to naim and were shall we say vocal in our non-appreciation for said whippet thrasher & tapper style fo presentation, so at this point in time (2002) and remember the flat earth society hadn't fully disbanded at this moment in time (or should that be gone underground lol), to say we were seen as thorn in the side of Salisbury's UK dominating 'world class audio' marketing juggernaut would be an understatement.
In those heady halcyon days, Mick Parrys system was seen as something of a pinnacle of whippet thrashery replay, so both Tim and I had a royal summon’ s to Dorcan to be given the 'naim holy grail treatment'. Do remember at this juncture many of the select 'PFM Elite' had been given the full Mick Parry treatment over the previous 18 months, with gushing praise and superlatives being bandied about at every opportunity by all on the fish. Mick P was at that juncture the unofficial naim brand ambassador for the factory. His connections there were deep & wide. Being a gong bashers and nipple shower plus a great architect admirer (first class with clusters) so his ability to converse with the upper echelons of the chief pointy heads @ Salisbury's HQ regularly gave him an advantage in the purchasing stakes. (so we were very honoured to receive the royal invite to a pair of upstarts who contempt for naim was very public).
Mick's systems in the summer of 2002 was a mixture of 'hard skool' mid 90's naimiee's wet dream system a full six pack & brik's under a 'severe' amounts of mana 'bleed edge' isolation (non stainless at that point in time), some of the latest 'new rca equipped' (boo, fix, swizz how dare naim leave their roots of din connections!!) post Saint JV new skool CDS3/High Cap plus a 252 pre amplifier and another naim 'wonder cap'.
Mick was a gracious host, a true gent, we admired the blunderbusses, mounted over the fireplace, I believe they were genuine Purdy’s from memory, after refreshments plus the 2 hour partial indoctrination of how naim could enrich our lives we settled down for the acid test
So this was the great naim world beating sound eh?, for naim at that time based on the 15 or so naim systems we had already been exposed to (trust me. most were fricking grim), this was quite tame in relation, showed more detail than most and had semblance of tonal quality. Although Tim & I looked at each other perplexed for a quite a while to fully grasp the one glaring issue that was present from the get go: The image (if you could call it that) was crawling along the lounge floor like a like a ruptured duck with a left side bias, quite peculiar would be an understatement. It was so obvious to ourselves, on several occasions we asked Mick if he was happy with the sound of his system, he replied quite robustly Naim experts had set up his systems and categorically assured him it was "absolutely 100% on point" He also proffered that over the previous 18 months or so, that many of the highest order of the grand naim listening hierarchy had passed their official seal of approval INCLUDING three official well known naim dealers.
Now you need to remember that naimies then didn't agree with sound staging to quote many it was a distraction, and being fair most listened to their system while lying down on the sofa so sound staging was for "hifi nurds" unquote.
After a hour or so of this partial torture, Mick offered to make more drinks, we took this opportunity to investigate any obvious problems with the system, to be honest it was the first port of call we found the left hand speaker had been wired out of phase.
We rectified this main issue, sat back down and mentioned nothing at all to Mick. Once again Mick ever the gracious host was sat over on the left-hand side, Tim & myself were sat in the usual listening positions in front of the audio assault set up.
It was immediately obvious that the soundscape had slotted in to how it should have been, we did not mention this at all during our time at Mick's place, although during the last 15 minutes before we left, Mick felt the system was now coming on song after 3 hours!
The following day we both wrote up our experiences at the Grand Vizier of naim including what we found and how we righted it, for the next 3 weeks we were bombard with irate pink fishers that felt were we either deaf/hatchet job on purpose/uncouth/uncivilised (and that from Guardian readers lol)/ tone deaf/anti British products/Thick/don't know how to listen/like stupid American audio, you name it (lol) we were labelled it .
However, a couple of days later, we both received PM's from Salisbury chief pointy head himself actually thanking us for pointing out the simple flaw that so many had missed, which I felt was a nice gesture from the man himself, strangely enough after that PM, all abusive 'fishing' stopped!
True story

I went to buy a phono stage at one time and found the chaps speakers out of phase. He never realised but was grateful for the improvement in sound afterwards.

My usual one is dancing up and down in frustration because I've hooked something new up and it won't power on. Dead as a doornail. Then realising that I have not plugged it in to the mains.
I don't know how many times over the years, but easily into double figures.

When I made my speakers they sounded great, but something just wasn't right... Channel balance was slightly off. After some investigation, I realised I'd wired one of 6.5" mid/bass drivers out of phase at the Xover. This was causing suckouts at the XO with the tweeter and 8" mid bass.
At that time I had no mic and was lucky I noticed with my ears. They sounded a lot better with all drivers wired up correctly!
I now have a mic, so all speakers can be tested during burn in.
