I was chatting with a mate who reviews for Hi Fi Pig, last night, and he bought up the subject of servers (he has a Melco). what are the advantages of using one, and getting my Audirvana to go to it for playing back Flacs. I have just been having a quick think about it, and yes, it will be a more expensive option than a new PC, but have been told the sound will be far better, and after all, we are all about the sound, right. Put me right guys, does it mean I can just use my Pc as normal, but just point my music playing app (Audirvana in my case) to play from the sever instead of my PC's SSD?

I would second Tony,s suggestion buy a reasonable quality streamer / server and the largest SSD / HD you can afford always give yourself plenty of unused space for new music . I will no doubt be out of step with others but I find the differences in servers very small and have yet to find any I have heard that would convince me to spend more than the very humble one I have currently . I would not give any specific makes but others on here have a range they use and can give their advice . In my view there are units that will do everything you need for under £1000 and the limit I would suggest would a maximum of £2000 . Paying more than that may well get a nicer looking item but I am not convinced it will get you any improvement to the music .

I would recommend an Eversolo A6, ( it was equal to my Lumin U2 mini and Auralic Aries for streaming duties) although I'm unsure about using Audirvana with it. I just use the Eversolo app for Qobuz and internal storage. Unsure whether you need to buy the largest SSD, I purchased one with enough space for my files with a bit to spare. I've only purchased 3 downloads in the last 2 years, I honestly can't see me buying that many more at my age with all the stuff on Qobuz. bencat If you listened to 5 albums per day, how long would it take you to hear all you stored music.

Dave it would be about just over a year to listen . However I am still buying music on CD and in certain cases downloads when the CD prices get silly . I know that I will not be able to listen to everything I already own but it is like a disease I hear new music and have to then find it and buy it .

Yep, agree, it is like buying books you know you will probably never read.

My mistake, I thought you had about 4TB of music, which would take you much longer than a year to listen to at 5 albums per day. Think we'll stick with the cheaper Qobuz option, and store on favourites.

Generally though, you don't listen to your entire collection all the way through over and over again, do you? You listen to something you like which can then lead you on to think about some other stuff you might have stored, so then you listen to that. antonio, how long would it take you to listen to the Qobuz catalogue of music, 14 albums a day

optical No you don't listen to your entire collection all the way through, and then start again. We would tend to listen to our favourite albums much more as you say. I thought Andrew had something like 4TB which is roughly 4 yrs worth of music at 5 albums per day, but in my case you could triple that since listening to favourites more often. Our Qobuz catalogue doesn't cost us any more than the monthly fees whether we have 100 or 1000 albums stored. I have nearly 1TB of stored files, even then there's albums I haven't listened to for years, music preferences changing with age. I should really go through and delete some, just too lazy. For the record I probably listen to 6hrs+ of music per day whilst in the uk, that figure decreases when I go abroad. Edit. My questioning Andrew's statement of buying as much SSD, as can be stored on the player, is because as I've said before, I don't like to see folks spend more than they have to.

Well that's me fooked then I have 1.6PB of music, so I'll be long gone before I get anywhere near 1/4 way through, however I much prefer the SQ of FBA over streaming and if no internet I still have music

I don't know what a PB of music is Tony, guessing it's a lot. Even with my miniscule amount of stored files I'll still have enough to see me through those times when the internet goes down for a couple hours.

I keep 4 & 8Tb SSD in spare Aurender drive caddy's use a usb 3 <> Sata cable and its ease to transfer music to a cleints new purchase, in my streamer I have two 8TB drives all full, and have six more to swap out depending on 'gig' or client. The main downlaoder/server/storage uses enterprise drives (warp drives yes really) blistering fast from high end server farms. All on custom power suppiles, iy just downloads music only totaly double air gapped and fire-walled. PC spots all of the items that makes sound listenable. I genuinelly purchase maybe 200 albums a year, plus the music from the reocrding studios, mind you some albums have been PGGB'd so are 46GB each

Currently I have about just under 3tb of FLAC rips around 78,000 tracks apologies I did not read and register the five albums a day I listen to far more each day but it would still take me over a year of I played it 24/7 . So at five albums a day about 4-5 years at least and it is still growing . Pete I do not listen to music in complete albums and mostly use song mix which I can change the % of the choices with currently 25% new music in whatever mix I generate each day . So while I may never listen to a full album I will get some of the tracks I have just bought in every session .

Must say we've listened to over 7hrs today, will finish in about 15 minutes, all full albums. Very rarely do we play a mixed playlist although Mark has about 15 on Roon.

I listen to a minimum 10 hours a day fiio m15 and fh9 iems while at work. Not much interest in music when I get home. Usually take 2-3 days off before the hifi comes on.

I feel Pete just wants a upmarket NAS drive, I don't feel he wishes to entertain anything else really. He has a set methodology and he is happy with that solution for him.

I have a Synology Nas, that I got about 3 years ago, its a single 2 tb hhd. I just use it as one of 2 backups. If a better kind of NAS is better, and pointing my Audirvana to play from it, instead of the PC, am open to suggestions. As Tony has said, I have my way of doing the playing of music files using the PC, its easy (! or 2 clicks of the mouse) and so convenient as have a mobility condition that makes using a TT or CD player a great and at times a painful exercise
