Preception is a big player in ANY high end purchase and that has been very obvious in the last 8 years or so and NOT just audio, but many past times. If the desriability is high for a product people will pay what they feel it is worth imho

With regards to Accusnooze/Accudoze I don't know about their source components but I don't see anything in the amplifier that would give it these qualities One measured here www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-accuphase-e-270-amplifier.6220/Okay it has some issues that it shouldn't have at the price but they're pretty minor. What makes a system sound boring? I would say rolled off top end or a lot of noise. This doesn't have either. There's a bloke on forums called 'Orbscure' who had some Accuphase kit at the Wigwam show when it was in Stoke that one time. Best room in the show by a margin and there were some good rooms. Anyway I love the looks and the build quality, who cares what it sounds like? It's dynamically that Accudoze kit fails for me. Think rolling hills rather than cliff edges. A lot of the tension and dynamic contrast is removed from the music. Can you measure that? I've no idea.

I struggle to get with the idea of amplifiers having a sound signature like a musical instrument. I mean I bought my guitar because of how it sounds (and plays) but my audio amplifier because of how it handles low impedance and abrupt phase shifts. Added to which people's impressions are all over the place. Search for NAD 3020 or A & R A60 (i.e ubiquitous amps tens of thousands of people have owned at one point) threads on various forums to get diametrically opposed opinions on how those amps 'sound.' Not everyone can be right, and I suspect no-one is. Obviously neither amp is a powerhouse so speaker load will change how they 'sound' in some case and I think that probably accounts for most, if not all, of the discontinuity.

What an excellent point Jerry, the ability of the amplifer to convey the musical constrasts, inflections and interplay between the musicians can't be quantified by any measurment equipment except for your brain/ear combination which ultimately is your decision maker.
This is where so many of the amplifiers with SNIAD & S/N figures north of 110db are how I would discribe as emotionally stunted, particulally many of the switching amps, they sport all of the desired metrics with aplomb, yet fail to communicate music at a fundemental level. To be fair I can think of many other non switching amps that demonstrate this trait, although from a slightly different perspective.
I will leave you with this anecdote, a couple of years ago I was working on an amplifier project for A N Other company, we where just finialising the beta testing on this 250Wrms stereo power amplifer, when it let go during testing (magic smoke does happen from time to time lol), one of the FET's had let go due to a mis calculation in the self biasing circuit. Anyway we couldn't obtain the exact model we would have wished for from that original part manufacturer.
We located another high quality part from another top tier intergrated circuit manufacturer spec's were identical, package indentical.
Parts duly installed (we replaced all 16 of them) well, what I can report is this, the resulted sound after 300 hours of load test before listening had begung again, the sound was quite markedly different from the original FETS we were using, it wasn't subtle yet the measurments for power/intermodualtion distortion/channel seperation/THD were all well within the original specification, yet viewing the FFT told a different story.
The upshot was that product is now using the latter FETS, funny old world audio isn't it?

After a gap of more than 12 days you could still recall how the amp sounded with the previous transistors? I wish I had that much confidence in my memory! The reality is that we accurately remember subtle cues in the sound for at most 4 seconds. After that, we think we still remember how well defined that hi-hat - or whatever - was, but we don't really. It is a funny old audio world.
