To be fair to Tony he has and does give advice for much cheaper things that work evidence his championing of LB Clock and bnc cables . But he is in the business of selling equipment as well and I have met and talked to people who own equipment for very different reasons not least of which is snobbery were high price has to be there to ensure their ego,s are appealed to . I think that quite possibly the motivation for owning and using systems are indifferent from ours .

I think that quite possibly the motivation for owning and using systems are indifferent from ours . I get that, and I'm certainly not trashing any approach (not least from Tony as he has advised myself on similar acquisitions). I just feel that the pairing of speakers (such as mine) with higher priced (and lower value) components, is going slightly against the ethos and approach which has led me to obtaining them. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on obtaining similar value for the sake of them 'assuming' a certain level of performance cannot be had below a certain threshold of price, if that makes sense? Anyway, perhaps my message has been lost in translation somewhere so I'll give it a rest . . . . Thrax Amplifiers, can't pass any judgement as I haven't heard one (as the cost is currently prohibitive . . . ).

Sorry was not saying you were getting at Tony and yes I do understand and agree with your points . I will unless the lottery strikes ever be able to afford this level . But like many on here I have heard a number of products even more expensive than this and been underwhelmed at the sound produced . I have also heard some modest set ups that sound wonderful . I foolishly despite shifting moods really believe my system sounds very good to me . But I know from visits by others that they are not as impressed . Does not change my view as this is my system and needs to make me happy .

Here's my take, your speakers are five figures now in cost genuine potential clients will have a system that components will be in that region as well. If you are demoning Purfi or similar cost items then many of them may well not be to keen. It's human nature. This is not about the cost, this is about you challengiing their own rationale on why the purchased products 'x' & 'y' imho. These chaps are not in a 'mass market' purchase situtaion imho Sorry, I'm a bit late to the 'party' on this... Just been on a bike ride! As Dave says, clients can obviously bring their own amps and front end. All I can do is use whatever kit sounds best to me (and many others, it seems) on my speakers. Having just renovated our house (and being in debt as a result), any amp choices have to be modestly priced. I will be upgrading when the opportunity presents itself, and I can afford it. As many have eluded to, more pricey is certainly not better in the hifi game. Most folks here seem to spend their money very wisely, so an amp costing £10k+ needs to be very good and MUCH better to even contemplate selling kidneys for!

Or if you want to try something utterly stupid, I've got one of these lying about: What is it? And why stupid? Power? (If a Thrax the thread isn't drifting too much) Krell KSA100 MK2 - 100wpc class A. Fan cooled - puts out 600 watts through the top vents, you never need the heating on. Just shy of 800 watts into 1 ohm. You can weld with it, supposedly Krell demoed this feature at a show back in the 1980s. Okay we are into thread drift but what can be said about the Thrax? It's a valve amp and it's way too much money.

I can see both sides of the argument, but lets be honest, spending £10k plus on speakers it is unlikely the purchaser will be partnering them with a £1k amp even though it maybe a great vfm amplifier. Unlikely. But not impossible. Mullet systems rule. 😂

I apologise in advance for the thread drift, but all that is right and wrong with hifi is totally encapsulated in this thread IMO. misterc is a well established, professional wallet lightener . His business is selling High Cost/Highly desirable equipment to folk who have the means to buy it. In his world, the only way to gain the respect/attention of people spending five figures and above is to partner his wares with items of similarly desirability. Thus creating the illusion that to get the sound he is presenting, the customer needs the partnering equipment level (cost) too. He's damn good at it too, and has my respect in this regard. So when he posts a bit of insight into the way this world works and how Jason can "raise" the profile (and price) of his speakers via association with other equipment, he is absolutely spot on. Which is why those reading this should heed that particular warning about "how hifi works" Also, When optical explains what this forum is about, he is absolutely right too. Thankfully there are still people like Jason out there. People who are trying their hardest to not only unearth incredible value, but incredible sound quality. Whoever says you cant have both is also entirely wrong! Now, if some sausage who visits him cannot recognise the utterly bonkers sound quality he has in his system because the partnering equipment doesn't have a particular brand name or hit a certain price point …well, they don't deserve the speakers, or the SQ. This forum, and it's members, have been laying waste to this kind of attitude/approach towards hifi for a few years now, and i think everyone on here has realised that we can make some really incredible sounding systems from the approach of getting a better understanding of what we are doing, rather than spending more on expensive tat to swing our dicks about owning.

Matching equipment by price tags or price points is absolutely the worst way to do it.
But even if the money doesn't get you better sound quality it might get you a better user and ownership experience via build quality, appearance, the all-important 'knob feel'.
If it was my business I would sell it from that perspective, rather than make false claims about each extra zeros on the price tag lifting yet another veil.
And of course really good speakers are never going to be cheap anyway, at least not bought new.

i had a mate come over from South Africa to live here. He had a fancy JVC set up but he had to sell it before he left as shipping was so expensive.
I sorted him out with some cast offs - AR-03 amp, B&O CD player and KEF Calindas. The KEFs never worked right in my room but they were minty with brand new X-over.
He was renting this house where almost all the downstairs was one big room, about 40x20.
I went round for a listen not expecting that much but it was absolutely epic. Yes, that great room was a big factor but that is still high in my top ten of 'Best systems ever.'
I totted up what that kit had cost me and it was £240.

If anyone ever needs a loaner while something's in the shop or they just want to try something different just give me a shout.
I've got pre-amps, power amps, CD players, DACs, transports, speakers, speaker cables, record cleaning machine, equalisers, portastudio, measurement microphone, you name it.
Only thing is you have to collect as shipping is a pain since they closed our post office.
