A few days ago I made mention to some friends I have no idea about valves, and their combined response was to try a pre/dac with valves, so any examples I can look at. Not silly money tho. I have the excellent PS SGCD at the moment, but was thinking about a change sometime

Anything cheap will most likely have horrible distortion, sound veiled and have ridiculous gain.....and therefore be noisy. "Valves" & "cheap" are two words that are never in the same sentence. I am not trying to piss on your bonfire, but just adding some "excessive" valve experience to your thread.

About the only pre type valve dac I can think off that could be worth bothering with and available sub £750 used would be either a Jolida Glass fx mk3 or Black Ice DSD DAC (BI is Jolidas new name). If/once you find one send it to Robert Ayers (Opendoor on the Wam) to breath his magic on it (minus volume control elimination), they're very good in standard guise but once Robert has played with it they're awesome easily matching dacs in the £3k+ bracket.
