Does anybody here like speakers with full range drivers? I've used a few pairs in the past and had some pretty decent results. I did at one time own the 'holy grail' (for some), the Coral Beta 10 drivers. Here's a piccie: And I built the large manufacturer's specified folded horn cabinets, like these, but mine were black. That's a pretty big cabinet, they are ten inch drive units. The performance was superb, I've never heard transient response like them since and at 102db sensitivity they could be used with just about any amp. Forget Lowther horns, they don't come anywhere close to these. I have also built other full range horns, with very enjoyable results. I still have a bunch of interesting drivers to try out, including these beautiful Chinese L Cao 8" alnico units:

I forget the model of driver and cabinet but it’s a well know DIY one. I thought it very musical and engaging. If there was missing treble, it didn’t hit me as obvious. Good enough to own? I’d say so.

Heard quite a few, used Visaton B200 for the mids in my OB’s. Have a pair of paper Alpair 12’s I’ve yet to try but will probably go with the Monacor 10” coaxial that Colin Topps used for us newest OB creation, it’s a great unit.

You can get surprisingly good results if the cabs are big enough. Not really for me though, I don' like the particular set of compromises you get with a full ranger. I'd still like to see Geoff actually build these speakers, he's been talking about it for years. You want to get it done while the weather is still good, Geoff.

I really do have motivational problems these days. I have five speaker projects to do, a turntable, amp and other miscellaneous bits to construct........................... Eventually.

Fine if you use them to cover say 200hz to 2k or so, fill in the rest with a nice 15” woofer and a decent tweeter.

This is the thing....Is there a single full range speaker out there that actually covers the "Full Range" ?

It depends on who's idea of full range, but I'd suggest a reasonably flat response between 50Hz and 15khz would be about right, with progressinve roll-offs above and below.
If a speaker with an 8" bass driver can deliver what most people regard as decent bass, why should an 8" full range driver be less capable in the right cabinet? And yes, some full rangers can deliver extended high frequencies. My Corals were certainly not deficient in either extreme.

Well not really, you still get the benefit of the most important part of the spectrum being produced by one driver, which still gives you the coherent sound that many like from a single driver speaker, so I’d contend that doing it this way gives you all the benefits but with better bass and treble.
