This isn't strictly a build, but thought this is the best place to put it. Some of you may know that a poor condition Puresound Tenuto platter mat came on a Ebay a few weeks back. It looked sad and unloved in the pics and was described as scrathed, pitted and tarnished. It was under 100 quid, so I took a punt on it. It arrived and actually looked better than I'd expected. It seemed perfectly flat and no real 'structural' issues. Cosmetically it was shabby and would require some refinishing. It couldn't be finished 'freehand' as I wanted the finishing marks to be perfectly concentric. I also wanted to ensure that any matetial removal (albeit minimal) would be uniform over the entire area - I didn't want to create any imbalances. I created a very Heath Robinson jig and got to work... The jig was simply a hand drill clamped to the end of the work bench. I put a bolt through the centre of the mat and clamped it between some rubber washers. The bolt went in the chuck and the mat was ready to spin. I used a small clamp to depress and hold the drill trigger to the required speed. It was a little wobbly but otherwise worked very well. I started with 80 grit and removed most of the tarnish and light scrathes, I then finished with 120 grit. I went easy over the 'Puresound Tenuto' lettering as didn't want to remove this. After about an hour she was looking fantastic again 😀. No scratches and all tanish gone. I degreased it and gave it a light coat of clear lacquer.

Lovely work Jason but I think you have few more major jobs you need to get done . Or is this a sort of relaxing get away from the house build ?

I half expected you to fix the drill at 33 rpm, stick an arm and cart on it and create a new line of turntables!!

I've got two of these mats which could do with some work......!!!!! How bad are they? It seems relatively easy to sort superficial cosmetic wear and tear.

I'm just whinging because I can't be bothered to put the effort in. Both my mats look to be in amazing condition when I have a piece of vinyl sitting on top of them, perhaps that's the answer ?
