A limited number that will be interested to be sure. However just reading about the Denafrips firmware update for their dacs. A rolling program starting with the Ares 2. Very positive comments across forums

I'll be starting this process this later today, once I can force myself to turn the music off 😁
Thanks for the heads up 😉

It’s just the Ares 2 for now, then a timetable for the rest. It’s slightly convoluted as you have to take the lid off and send a picture of the chip to them and they send a link for the download. However reports are of improved soundstage etc etc

'Fraid not it's an Ares II, once I heard it I didn't feel the need to go higher so this firmware update will do nicely I think.

Well, my submission of the info required is on it's way to Denafrips so we'll wait on the right Firmware arriving and I'll give it a go.

Well I don't know why it took so long, but my advice would be to look at the instructions on another device and ONLY have the updating programme up on your pc/mac or whatever that way you don't have to hide a page to view the command prompt that comes up, I think it didn't start until I clicked back onto the command prompt menu.
As soon as I clicked back onto the command prompt screen the 'flashing in progress' text came back and it updated within 5 minutes from there.
Nervous, me?
😂
Off to test it now.

So… despite being told that you shouldn’t begin a sentence with ‘so’, I keep hearing enthusiastic young women doing it all the time on radio 4. The worlds changing and not necessarily for the better. So… I haven’t actually carried out this ‘upgrade’ yet. Mainly after reading the instructions and getting scared silly of ‘bricking’ the thing. I run an elderly Mac mini .. although have an even older windows laptop somewhere. Every time I attempt to follow instructions for installing something on the Mac, the reality is inevitably totally different on my machine. So… is it worth it.? Question for Mikey

Steve I have a pretty up to date Lap Top Windows 11 . I am also fairly handy with digital software and instructions . If it would help I could come round and bring my Laptop with me and then look through what is needed to be done and if you are happy then do the update . I would suggest that if at all possible it is better to do this yourself but always happy to help . Another tip is that if you do a search on You Tube there is bound to be someone who has posted a video of the step by step way to do this . Watch it once full through without doing any thing then watch to the first step stop the video and complete the work to there . Then go through each step one at a time pausing and rewinding the video till you get to the end . If in doubt I often do this .

A generous offer Andrew of your time and expertise. I shall bear it in mind. However it is quite likely that I’m going to be selling the Aries in the foreseeable future, so the software improvements were for curiosity really. I have the 686 incoming in the near future, so I had promised myself not to go experimenting too much until that and the triple c RCA’s are in back place. I’d been swapping dacs about out of curiosity and came to the conclusion that my current power amp (an apart champ 1) is not sufficiently resolving. It was hard to tell kit apart. When the 686 is in place I know for certain that this will not be the case. Added to which we are off to Greece next week so time is limited. However your kind offer is really appreciated Thank you.

I updated mine (with a windows pc) and it worked perfectly. The changes to sq were subtle, and I was very happy with it before, opening up of the sound stage a little and a bit more airy. Definitely better but I would not say transformative. Running with a 286 and a pair of arke speakers.

Some feedback has a preference for the original firmware, so good to hear that improves things from your perspective…even if only marginal.

So....as those pesky kids say. I did it. Unusually for me, by reading the instructions...carefully ...twice. In the end my fears were baseless as the instructions are dead simple and paint by numbers.. On firing up the Aries back in my system Was quite a shock, as my expectation was to have subtle changes. In my system the improvements are anything but subtle.. it’s like having a completely different Dac. Dynamic, very detailed and such a clearer presentation.. less cloudy etc etc No idea why my experience is different to Mickey and Tony.

I was playing it down to lower your expectations, I didn't want to hype it up and then for you to be disappointed.

Nice one Steve doing it yourself is always the best way . Good that it is an improvement as well . Ah.. well..mmm.. now whether it’s an improvement as such .. the jury is still out. I have some massive changes about to change the game. Full loom triple c to go with the 686. Now the clarity the firmware change comes with a hint of harshness. My changes might enhance this.. or might not!
