I've bought a (cheap) Sansui FR D3 direct drive TT.
Unfortunately all is not well . . . .
It powers up fine and speed seems okay however it won't turn off . . . . well, it sort of won't. When the tonearm returns to the rest position and you hear the 'click' of the relay switch, the strobe dims and the platter slows down a bit, but doesn't actually stop.
Weirdly, if the TT has been left off for a while it seems to work okay for a couple of minutes before it displays this issue. If you just leave it on 'standby' ie, relay switch pressed down by the position of the tonearm, it just starts spinning (slowly) by itself, then you can't stop it. It's like the relay switch has no or limited effect after the TT has been on for a while.
I've looked over the circuit boards and cleaned any gunky bits and sprayed with contact cleaner etc, no change.
Also the auto return mechanism seems to judder quite severely, although not always. I did take the platter off so wonder if there is a specific method of putting it back on so as to 'load' the auto-return mechanism properly. I know they can be quite complicated and all seem to operate slightly differently.
I am assuming the culprit for the power issue is a short somewhere or a leaky cap, which only manifests when it has reached full power/charge etc.
I know it's probably a lost cause but wondered if anyone had any bright ideas!
Cheers guys.

A lot of faults are mechanical in nature. Make sure all switch contacts are clean, contact cleaner may not cut it. You could be right that the power supply is in need of fettling.

I've had a couple of good'uns and a couple of bad'uns now so I guess it's a calculated risk each time. Annoying becasue on paper this is a really good deck. Had a Pioneer PL 516 which was similar and it sounded really nice, similar auto-return feature, which I came to really appreciate. I was hoping this would be the same. So, I'm still on the look out for a budget spinner, direct drive would be nice but up until £500+ they're pretty flimsy. On another note, the look on my sons face after he was allowed to press the button and the tonearm magically returned to its rest and the platter stopped spinning, was worth the outlay alone . Forget your iPad son, this is mechanical entertainment.

Never had a Sansui deck otherwise I'd have tried to help! The Sansui 929 looks like it could be a great performer.
