I have been listening to a few tracks this morning, and they sound good thru my speaker/amps etc, but listening to the same tracks about 9PM, there is a notable better sound. Is it my ears, or does the power kind of get better at night, as demand is lower? Just wondering

Is it my ears, or does the power kind of get better at night, as demand is lower? Just wondering I believe this is most peoples experience Pete, lots of factors could be involved. The mains are probably a bit quieter depending on where you live, if you live in a flat or terraced housing etc, noise will be higher in general on the mains. Immediately outside is generally a lot quieter, again depending on where you live, so you can actually hear your system more accurately. Your brain is usually more relaxed towards the evening, we're very sensitive to light/ambiance etc, it's 'easier' to listen to music (relative term). Overall whatever the reason (likely a combination of a few, including taking a beverage or two sometimes) it does seem to be true. Certainly my experience.

My guess is that there can be a bit of variation, in terms of sq experienced, due to the varying quality of the mains throughout the day and night, for one thing.

Alcohol consumption?

nothing to do with the mains quality although if demand is high enough you can get enough of a sag in voltage to affect some amps but that won't exhibit itself as slightly worse SQ.
The mains is always 'bad' - if the distortion on the AC actually got through to the DC going to the speakers then there'd be no such thing as hi-fi equipment, at least not electrically powered kit anyway.
I'd say by far the most likely reasons are your mood and the ambient noise level being significantly different.

alcohol is the second biggest upgrade to sound quality. Magic mushrooms is number one, especially for the emotional connection to the music.
I didn't really appreciate how much of an upgrade alcohol is until I stopped using it.
We are the most variable component in any system.

Having your curtains shut in the evening will change things, probably for the better.

Having your curtains shut in the evening will change things, probably for the better. do not have any curtains drawn, just blinds but I reckon its just the sounds that are there in the background are not noticeable, we live in a very very quiet village, and we are the only detached bungalow in our housing association community

When Mrs. Pony puts on her fleecy dressing gown in the evening, 'room treatment' doesn't get any better than that. Makes listening more relaxing. I should move her about the room to find her optimal location, I just need to find a way of suggesting it without getting a thick ear.

Too funny, and I notice you used the word location and not position ....

Thing is, you can only go so far before domestic harmony is compromised. It's a fine line. For instance if I have to move the telly, depending on which way she ends up facing, she may go off the idea.

The problem with using women as passive room treatment is that they don't tend to be all that passive.

The problem with using women as passive room treatment is that they don't tend to be all that passive. Don't I know it! Mrs. P was in passive mode when you came visiting, that is not her default position. But she has a lot to put up with (me), so on balance she's lovely really.
