My brother is getting back his enthusiasm for vinyl and has just serviced his Systemdek IIX with Linn Basic arm from the late 80s. The MP11 cartridge has seen better days!! Has anyone something sitting in a drawer that they may like to sell to help him on his way, or suggest a decent replacement. I think he will be looking to upgrade soon as he seems drawn to Michell decks so something to tide him over.
Thanks everyone

I used to have a Systemdek IIX with Basik plus. Used lots of carts, Nagaoka were my favourite though. I'd get a new stylus for the MP11. MP110 stylus is backwards compatible.
A Michell deck is not really an upgrade to a IIX - IME.

If he wants something less expensive, I have an AT VM 95C brand new boxed.

Yep IIX is a superb deck, if anything it's held back by the current arm. Swap it out for either a, Jelco or Project 9" or get a replacement Rega, geometry arm board then fit an RB250/300 or any of the 1st 3 in the Origin Live range. I'd say you should grab the VM95C then later get the 95ml stylus for it, I've a RigB bodied 95ml amongst the carts I use with my 401/R200 in my 2nd system, it's a stonking cart.

Personally I would take the MP11 over an AT95 any day of the week it is just a better cartridge all round.
Added to which the Systemdek can be a bit lightweight in the lower frequencies and the MP11 will compensate for that. I reckon an AT95 will sound too thin and analytical so unless that's the sound he is after...
I wouldn't bother with the expense and hassle of changing the arm, it is good enough for the deck. I'm assuming it is the Basik Plus as opposed to the old S shape Basik? Not familiar with the S shape one so maybe that isn't up to much, I don't know.

Time for an update.
He has reflected on comments and done a bit of his own research and picked up a very nice Rega RB300 arm and intends to buy and stick with the Nakaoka cartridge for now. Think he is also looking out for an acrylic platter.
Should have a great TT there once all put together.
Thanks again everyone.

Years ago my neighbour also had a Systemdek, not the IIX, it was the later model with the logo written in red but it had the acrylic platter and mine had the glass. We did try swapping them over but we couldn't tell any difference. At the time the acrylic platter was generally considered an upgrade, and my dealer tried to sell me one. Anyway I wouldn't say to him don't bother but don't spend a lot of money on one (I no idea what they cost now).

Thanks macca , that is really helpful, I'll pass that on to him. I think he has made so many changes to it in a short time, or least will have when arm is fitted, he may leave the platter for now. But I will mention looking out for a cheap one.

I'm glad he has decided to stick with the Nagaoka.
I had all sorts of carts on that deck, A&R, Ortofon, Goldring, Stanton - none of them were the cheapo ones either - but Nagaoka really worked the best. I ended up with the MP30 which was just stunningly good.
We wore out the original stylus in less than 3 months (I had a couple of student lodgers who were using it all the time too), so got a replacement one and that was even better. Now I have an MP50 on my Technics, although that's currently in mothballs. Once I get the house renovated I'm going to set it back up though.
