So I’ve continued to talk to the voices in my head about continued use of Roon. Kicked the ball into the long grass by switching to annual payment now rather than keep on monthly payments. Net result is that annual for 2023 equivalent to £8/month vs £12/month if I’d done nothing. ie I’ve locked into 2022 annual bill by doing it before Jan 1st increase (which is $120 vs $150)
So the conversation I have with myself can carry on for another year at least.

Is roon just software?
No streaming service, so that's separate?

Roon is a software management system, but we already know your feelings about management Oli.

Is roon just software? No streaming service, so that's separate? Yeah.. it was fantastic when you had or have music on a drive, yet we’re streaming at the same time. Now I find my NAS is just a bit of a pain (Russian malware attacks) and these days everything is pretty much available. However what I find great about Roon is not just running multi systems and now also mobile systems, but you can easily ‘group’ systems… so for instance this time of year I can have the same stream of Xmas music playing through 3 or 4 different systems round the house. I know this can be done with other (free) software.. but it’s just all so simple. Then once a playlist or album is finished, Roon radio takes over and will play something similar .. or connected. The third thing I love is the dsp system which makes my living room system work well with Harbeth speakers that don’t really do bass without a signal from Roon to boost it. Well.. I’m sure there are other ways, but in my lazy world it works well. So yes, then you need to fork out another subscription for Qobuz/Tidal or Spotify.

Oh.. and just one more thing. Someone has written an app for Apple TV which controls Roon. And you can control any zone that has Roon on it. And!!!.. a clever German bloke wrote some software that allows you to use a Microsoft surface dial (in front of telly) It connects to a raspberry pi that then talks to Roon on your network. No more diving for the phone to alter volume or stop a track So.. laziness is worth £8 a month I reckon.

Is roon just software? No streaming service, so that's separate? Just software, yes, it's a way of combining your steaming service from Qobuz and Tidal as well as your own files. It's also a search engine that searches for new material similar to your own collection etc. Pretty, but you can do it all for free, so save money and just install Logitech Media Server on a Pi or mini pc like a NUC or similar and then add Material Skin and you can then install whatever add ons you want. Here's an excellent post on PFM that shows LMS and Material in all its glory. pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads/logitechmediaserver-its-come-a-long-way-and-im-thoroughly-impressed.274847/
