This is just a general question and interested in what those with more technical savvy then me think . I have just bought an Audio GD USB to SPDIF converter off e-bay paid £40 including postage so not a major purchase . Bought this mainly on the fact i liked the other Audio GD digital interface I bought .
Now for the question this came without ant cables or additional power supply and given that like I am sure many on here i have box load of both that was not an issue . Now there is a switch that you can use to have the unit as USB powered or you can add an offboard Oower Supply of 5-10 V so that it becomes self powered . Now in my head it is a foregone conclusion that adding an offboard power supply of good quality is going to be better than using a USB power supply but is that really the case ?
I have a spare 5 v Chinese LPSU that I can use and at a later date I may also have an additional LPSU to use that might or might not be slightly better we will have to see on that . So what is the feeling about this will an additional power supply make any difference or is the theory that better power supplies are always better not really true ? I have the chance to test this now at a really low level and intend to have a little bit of fun doing this .

I'd expect the LPSU to be a worthwhile upgrade. I'm also in favour of offboard USB converters rather than using the USB input on kit. It's a couple of years since I used USB, but that was always the case for me.

bencat That's a great buy for £40, just put your Chinese 5v LPS on it.

Another cheap idea you can try Andrew is a USB battery. You know, the kind you use as a backup for your mobile phone. Batteries generally give very clean power. Maybe you already have one.
Just double check what the power draw is for the GD is and ensure the battery is able to provide it. Many batteries can provide 5v/3a (i.e. 15w).

I use a USB power supply on my speed controller with my 301. Very good idea.

Thank you for the views and advice . Have to say I have been less than impressed battery power supplies they are in fact quite noisy as they reach half discharge and then just get noisier . Will have a think about trying battery but will have to buy it if I decide to add it to the fun .

The USB power bricks have a switch mode converter inside them to step up the 3.6V battery to the 5V output. They are not anything like connecting directly to a battery.

John hold off on that as has been indicated I need to do a bit of research to find out before I decide if I want to try it and what sort of battery supply I should use . Will PM you if I want one those you have offered .

If the unit has a USB input and a separate power input then yes it should work using the USB to power it and accept the data as well .

I have had the unit up and running for a few hours now. One of the wee annoying. little quirks, is that "green light" thats on the front of the unit. Its a great wee thing, and has opened up the sound quite a bit, as far as soundstage goes, and the bass is slightly better. I was looking at getting new speakers, but the change this device has bought is making me hold that though for a while. Just have to look into better powering I suppose
