My Radford SC22 STA25 system has developed a harsh sound when playing cd's. The treble is accentuated. Could the valves in the pre-amp be a possible cause? Should I swap the ECC83's in the preamp?

How old are the ECC83's? Are they 2nd hand?

They are old but I still have a number of unused ones I can use. I was going to swap them but wondered what affect they could have on the sound quality.

I think you've answered your own question. Just swap them and see what happens, what's the worst that can happen ?

Before you change anything I would try a few of the other sources first . If the harshness is showing on all of the sources then this would point to the pre and power being the source . If it stays just with CD then switch the CD line input channel . If the issue follows the CD then it is most likely the player causing the fault because you will have already checked another source in that input and not heard the same issue . If the harshness stops with another input then it is likely to be in the line stage on the Radford and you can then narrow down which are the valves you need to look at .

If it is a dodgy valve you might be able to see it doing weird stuff once it warms up. Valves in the power amp will have a shorter life so more likely to be one of those but could be the pre-amp.
If it's not the valves then will likely be a faulty component in pre or power. Least likely to be the CD player at fault.

If it is the same with all sources and still there after valve swaps then think about the Tannoys xovers if they are still original, they may benefit from recapping. They can be a bit peaky.

It's quite possible that the CD player is overloading the aux inputs as they are only 100mV vs the CD's 2V!

True! But connecting a CDP player directly to one of the inputs can definitely overload it to the point of audible distortion - some variants of the SC22 only have the gain controls operating the phono stage and some had it functional across all inputs. Variants with the fixed gain inputs will definitely overload
