Hello,
I’m thinking about purchasing a new amp for my tannoy speakers. I’m going to sound very stupid here but can someone explain the difference between pre amp integrated amps and power amps. Abrahamsen has been recommended to me to match my tannoy XT8f speakers and I’m lost what to do/buy for a warmer sound.
david.

Recommendations are not a road map to success. What works in one system does not work in others. A Preamp is just the volume control/input selection. The power amp is only the gain section, and an integrated is everything in one. I'd suggest sticking to an integrated amp at the moment, as your question suggests you haven't got too far into this yet. Can you tell us what your current setup is and what it is that makes you think you need a specific amplifier for your speakers.

Pre amp does the source selecting duties + attenuation/boosting of the incoming signal. Whereas the power amp takes what its given in the way of voltage (dependent on where volume knob is set) and adds gain to increase the volume you hear through your speakers. An integrated is just the above 2 in one box without the associated external interconnects.
Well that's it in basic terms, I'm sure someone will be along to fry your brain in a bit.

Hi there, Yes I’ve got a marantz 8005 amp which is a very bright sounding amp and not a great combination to my tannoy xt8f speakers. As they are quite bright sounding speakers. I’ve been researching on YouTube re good matches to my tannoys and loads recommend the Abrahamsen amps. That’s as far as I’ve got buddy.

dabs. If you can I would get yourself to the Wam Show on Sunday 2nd of October. Lots of nutters (enthusiast owners) myself included are exhibiting. If I remember correctly, someone exhibitor NG is bring xt6f, visiting the show will give you a chance to hear plenty of kit to srt what type of sound you want. Also have a chat about what your after as some may be able to help narrow things down for you. Also if someone's local they may offer to bring an amp to yours to see how it blends in.

I've had a few Marantz amps, and I can't say I found them particularly bright. I have heard infinitely brighter amps, but ok, fair enough. The thing that worries me, is that you're fixing a problem by creating another. Buying particular devices to cancel out the negatives of other devices can only be a bad thing, and should you ever change speakers, you'll find you may have to change amplifier too. I believe macca highlighted the issue with the response from you speakers in another thread. If you're dead set on keeping the Tannoys, then I would be more inclined to try and loan an amp to try with them. Buying kit you haven't personally heard is a big gamble and where amps are concerned, not many people make all of their money back If they don't work out. Where about are you?

don't buy a different amp it won't help.
Your Marantz amp, like almost every amplifier ever made, has a flat frequency response. Also your speakers are a pretty easy load for an amplifier so will not prevent it from performing optimally with them.
Some amplifiers, when combined with a speaker that presents a difficult load, might give a dull, or a bright (bass shy) sound and this is where the myth of 'bright sounding' amplifiers comes from. Just people coming to the wrong conclusion as to the reason for what they are hearing.
Avoid people who are telling you that some specific brand of amp will 'match' the speaker, they don't know what they are talking about and will probably go on to give you further bad advice that will cost you money for no benefit.
You have a good amp and whilst the speakers are too bright for your tastes right now they are still good, and that problem can probably be solved without changing any of the equipment.

if you can post up a couple of pics of your room it will make it easier to offer some advice about speaker placement and room acoustics.
Room acoustics is like rocket science and I am no expert - and even they disagree on some things - but there are usually some pretty simple things that can be done to radically improve your perception of the sound.

Upload photo to app, copy BB code, (has img & /img in square brackets at each end & http and numbers/letters in between) then just paste into your post.

When uploaded select a code from the drop-down menu, you want the BBC code. Copy it and paste it into your post on here.

I see from your other thread about speaker cables that your cartridge is an AT440MLB. Do you listen to vinyl exclusively? If so, maybe a change of cartridge could better tame the 'brightness', and for a lot less money.
And if you were to go down this route, I'm sure plenty here could guide on choices to suit your Audiomods arm.

I've never heard one so can't speak first hand, but that's certainly not a bad suggestion.

Hiya everyone,
Thank you all very much for all your help on this matter. I’ve actually decided to the the marantz amp and network player as hardly use the networker and it makes sense to sell them as a pair. Thank you once again.
