with the gyro u have to have the later model with the motor unit seperated from the main chassis..then make a shelf on it's own table for the motor unit..makes a big difference...plus setting up a gyro is so damn easy...hated the faffing about with the lp12.. Orbe was beautifully easy to set up too, the LP12 reminds me of something like a Ford Popular, it’s become so outdated in terms of it’s design, engineering and materials choice, it just seems silly to male it today, Don’t get me wrong, it can still sound good, but lots of designs have come along since that are clearly better designed and engineered or use more appropriate materials. At the very least, if you’re going to have a sprung subchassis, distribute the weight more evenly and make it adjustable from the top, don’t use pressed steel for a subchassis and don’t rely on a coupe of grub screws to hold the armboard in place, I’d also get the motor pod separated too, and I far prefer rim drive to having a sub platter. Mazak isn’t a good sounding platter material to my ears either. Apologies in advance to any LP12 lovers. Just my own thoughts and not gospel I can understand why Linn kept with the deck. It’s been a legend and changing it out of all recognition would have been bad business. Keeping with old design makes good corporate sense if not engineering sense.

nice strong cartridge aswell...even on full tracking weight the armature never dropped much..many carts u run on full weight they just sag almost to the body lol 1042 was good there. K18mk1's collapsed after a while of that kinf of abuse I remember. the mk2 didn't. Not bad for an AT95E body with a fancy-foo mount and diamond, is it? It still perplexes me because that’s all it was, I wonder how much the bolt added. Never tried it without.

Dunno... I get great sounds from properly loaded ceramic cartridges (yes, really) and you don't need speakers when using them I think needle talk is a lot to do with the compliance of the stylus assembly myself... DL103? Why is it so revered as it obviously is. Boppy bass, cloudy mids and highs that roll off as the side progresses, yet audiophiles the world over think it's the dog's danglies... I set one upo for RD a little while ago and it's absolute pants - and no comments about the phono stage used either!!!!! Just watched our local carnival procession and in particular a small samba ensemble giving it all they've got! Most domestic stereo's can't get close and as for vinyl - do leave off..... As much as I like the 103 I’d far rather buy a 103R: So much more clarity for only a bit more money. Easier to use too, because you don’t need such a heavy arm. Never heard highs rolling off as a record progresses though and I’ve had a few.

The whole package worked well and Linn should have kept it going. the K5 concept lives on as the Goldring E2 (posher body, aluminium cantilever and conical stylus) but the K9 doesn't really have an equivalent these days, although the AT530 with naked stone may be close if a little lively. The AT540 is the best of these though by all accounts. Maybe the K18 would now be evolved onto the AT750? The current Adikt is a Goldring 1012GX in drag for double the money, but may sound slightly tamer as I recall it... Interestingly, the AN version of the 1012GX is sharp and nasssssty I gather, the diamond wearing out as the suspension beds in ...

In terms of audiophoolery, a Kiseki Lapis Lazuli (I think in a Zeta arm) which was two grand or so thirty years ago - the Agat Ruby I sold a pal ran it close though, this in a perfectly good but audiophool-boring SME V - I say that because arms with large midrange resonances seem to be preferred as it gives a false sense of 'life' to some vinyl based systems in th eabsebse of unbiased reviewers knowing what the sound 'should' be like - in my opinion obviously.

In the stock 103's case it's a couple of db down at side end, and all down to the conical tip, even if it's a 'sharp' one...

Eagles, Long Road Out Of Eden should suffice. It’s inevitable I will have another Denon one day because so few other carts I like are either made or affordable. Only other show in town for me would be DL304 or a crazy deal on an OC9 or AT33, Everything else is too expensive these days. You sometimes see Benz Micro or Hana offered cheaply but I have no idea about either.

Hana is good, stable and strong sound I think, not expensive for what they are and pretty unpretentious I think, although I haven't lived with one. Don't know the benz, but if it was a 'sweetie' I probably wouldn't like it overmuch...
Not sure if the DL304 has been dropped now, but Denon, or the then UK importers (Hayden Labs), wanted to kill it twenty years ago when I went to work in Northampton and I remember the 'public' didn't want it to die... We ordered a couple and had to wait for them to be shipped over on the next consignment...

Yes, when I said “time warp” I had I meant back in time. Linn seem to have warped forward about 50years and anticipated raging inflation
