I’ve been noticing a few things that seem to have stayed realatively close to their 1980s and 1990s prices. I thought it was a good topic for a thread.
Here are some from me.
Audio Technica AT-OC9 was £399 back in the day. Seems you can get them for £449 today, maybe cheaper.
Denon DL-103 seems to be available for £150 ish and sometimes less. Yeah I know it has a conical stylus: So what? It sounds great and tracks better than many fancy profiles. Anyway, this thread is about prices rather than relative merits.
Rega carbon. OK so it’s a relatively new cart, but it’s based on an ancient AT and it’s not much more than it was 30years ago.
I’m sure there’s are loads more. If that Croft cheapie preamp has still been made, it would’ve topped anythjng.

Now we are living in 'The Future' big tellys and the internet are the only two positives as far as I can tell.. Everything else is much worse than it was 30 years ago.

How about phone calls? When I started in the cellphone game it was 50p a minute off peak and a quid a minute peak rate. No per second billing, if you ran over a minute by 1 second that was another quid.

Cartridges are odd and the AT95e and I suspect the AT91/Carbon (the Carbon has a posher badge on the front, but don't know if it's any different) are now Chinese made I understand (the 95E certainly is). These are definitely an exception. The once well priced Shure 97XE has now departed, or will very shortly.
This industry is contracting still apparently. Ortofon started the price rises I feel with the 2M models - higher than the preceding 500mk2 and OM Super models I believe) which have remained static as everyone else has gone up to mach them. nagaokas are the biggest rip-off imo, the MP11 now the MP110 at £139 or so when it used to be £17 and similar price to the cheap AT's i seem to recall. Dynavector have gone bananas too. In my day, the 10X IV was the same price as the DL110 and similar performance. Now, it's £499 when the DL110 is well under two hundred quid (itself double the price or higher than it was in the late noughties before the 'crash.'

Does anyone know the story with Nagaoka? I seem to remember them giving up making cartridges, then suddelnly they are back. I never got on with them at them time but then that’s the story with me and MM carts all over. I wouldn’t rule out trying me again in a different setup and changing my tune though.

ones i tried were shite . Have you liked any MMs Rudi? I can’t say I’ve been entirely happy with one. They can be decent enough but when you’ve had a good MC they seem to lack treble extension and fine detail.

I must say, Rega haven’t done too badly with their decks. On 1987 I remember Planar 2 being £188. The 3 these days is a better deck by all accounts and both are still very affordable, plus you have the 1 which lets lots of people spin vinyl cheaply.
NVA P20/A20 starter kit isn’t directly traceable back to the 80s but the P50/A40 were £350 I recall. You did get a phono stage then, but nowadays you get cables included and it’s £50 cheaper today.
Linn K20 was only a fiver a metre last time I looked. Probably the only bargain you will find from them though.

u know i have a theory..the less needle talk a cartridge has the better it sounds...the dl304 is almost silent when playing..that oc9 you could hear across the room lol

I think the motor is also differently mounted. I like them better without the lid too, as I have done with every deck. I would love to know how much better the current one is, because the old one as a great listen,

from about 1984 to about 1999 i lived and breathed messing with record decks..
u try the bicycle inner tube between 2 slabs of granit westie? worked wonders..blutac arm dampening?
i tried it all...bike inner tube always lowered the noise floor. and cost peanuts..
what about that liquid they sold to clean all your contacts? cant remmeber the name of it...record decks were my passion for many years...was so damn excited to get a mint lp12 ekos lingo arkiv for 1k sold my old lp12 ittok k18 for 500 quid so only cost me 500 quid.. ffs i was dissapointed when i first lowered the needle...sences working overtime 12 inch by xtc was the first tune...circa 1992...

I never tried that but I know Max Townshend was a fan so I’d expect it to be good. greatest curiosity is with unipivots, onlynhad one, the Mayware Formula IV but it left me wanting more. They do everything wrong, have far less dynamics and punch, yet they just sound so free and “right”. Also make MMs sound better too.
My only remaining decent deck is a PS-6750 and so my chances of dabbling with arms will depend on whether I buy another deck. The Sony is great sounding and a pleasure to use. Nothing to tinker with though and dull as ditchwater to look at.

tbh i think vinyl has had it's day few years back i did a back to back test against flac files with my gyro
flac wiped the floor with it...cant even be bothered to make a pooter system nowadays..lost all interest in audio now...all my listening is done on you tube anyway..through my awesome 50 quid philips wireless headphones...50 quid and they sound amazing. lost my passion for music aswell..and films..used to love messing with av aswell..lost all interest..nothing lasts forever..same with motorbikes. lost interest.

How’d you go from LP12 to Gyro? As much as I can see the limitations of the LP12 I don’t even regard the Gyro as a proper deck, sounds utterly dead to me. Mind you, I haven’t heard a recent one,

sold the lp12 ekos..gave up with it for 2 years...bought one direct from jon michell and loved it..i like a smooth sound westie. then 1996 the wife left me after having it off with a different mate lol and left me with no cash so had to sell it. then 2005 bought another one...
tbh i loved the gyro due to one main thing..it was only 500 quid back then and i could pop in for say a new armboard for like 40 quid...plus i had an iso then and jon would recalibrate it for my next needle lol..i worked around borehamwood and so was easy toown one. and was fed up paying linn prices ffs. factory then was like something out charles dickens..just a large shed full of junk lol...

with the gyro u have to have the later model with the motor unit seperated from the main chassis..then make a shelf on it's own table for the motor unit..makes a big difference...plus setting up a gyro is so damn easy...hated the faffing about with the lp12..

I think I’m a bit of an adrenalin junkie when it comes to sound. I must say I was impressed wiith the build and engineering of the Orbe I had. I do like the company too. They early Gyro I knew sounded thin and lifeless to me. But that was at the height of flat earth and PRaT. The odds were stacked against it I guess. Just goes to show how different tastes can make one man’s meat another man’s poison. Worst arm I’ve ever owned was Linn Basik Plus. Biggest vinyl upgrade was when I bought and fitted an Ekos and OC9 in place on Basik Plus and K9. The increase in presence, dynamics and outright clarity still sticks with me today. I’d still have an OC9 any day of the week. They work really well in Rega arms too, so it’s a cheap way to get a top flight sound, as long as it’s your thing of course and I know it’s not yours.

Dunno... I get great sounds from properly loaded ceramic cartridges (yes, really) and you don't need speakers when using them I think needle talk is a lot to do with the compliance of the stylus assembly myself... DL103? Why is it so revered as it obviously is. Boppy bass, cloudy mids and highs that roll off as the side progresses, yet audiophiles the world over think it's the dog's danglies... I set one upo for RD a little while ago and it's absolute pants - and no comments about the phono stage used either!!!!! Just watched our local carnival procession and in particular a small samba ensemble giving it all they've got! Most domestic stereo's can't get close and as for vinyl - do leave off.....

K18mk1's collapsed after a while of that kinf of abuse I remember. the mk2 didn't. Not bad for an AT95E body with a fancy-foo mount and diamond, is it?
