I have at the moment the PS Gain Cell Dac/Pre, and have no complaints with it (despite terrible review on certain Audio Science web site). A few friends have said the PS Direct steam dac should be next... Any thoughts ? Obviously will demo it in the fist place

Never heard one, so I can add nothing other than “go and have a listen to one” and make up your own mind afterwards.

Hi Phil
The stock pre section in that dac is very average at best and pretty much any quality pre will improve it no end.
Pete
You really like the Basking style sound? Ok, I thought the UK has progressed past softer warmer sounds with big fruity bass, still have pair sat in storage maybe this expalins why? Audition first seriously

Audition first seriously I am quite a fan of PS gear, having recently bought there M700mono blocs. The idea of upgrading the Dac/pre will be my next big purchase (within a strict budget). As myself and a mate are off to the hi fi show in Daventry next month, I will have a look to see whats about, then try for a home demo

A few friends have said the PS Direct steam dac should be next... Any thoughts ? Obviously will demo it in the fist place well they measured it and it turned out very poor from that point of view. There's no arguing with that, it isn't subjective, it's a fact. Seems to me you can buy a DAC with high levels of noise and distortion very cheaply so where's the advantage in paying PS Audio thousands for the same thing? Their marketing is a mix of pseudo-science and mumbo jumbo. Despite the very high price it has mains noise leakage which you don't have any of even in a Topping E30 at £140. Really it is an amateur effort and the designer embarrassed himself trying to defend it. My advice is to avoid it like the plague.

There's no reason anyone prefer kit with vanishingly low distortion over something less well numbered, it takes all sorts after all. Of course if they do they're just wrong...
