Any gear you've bought and sold on later for a profit ?

Almost all of it. I only buy cheap because you have to cover EBay and paypal fees as well as a bit for the buyers who try to rip you off.

When I went back to college in '92 I was a bit skint so I used to buy and sell for a profit to make a few extra bucks. I knew a bloke who had been kicked off his electronics course, then got a job in a warehouse but got sacked for nicking DVDs. He was into hi-fi and could fix anything. So I'd get broken gear, mostly amps, for 5 or 10 quid, pay him £20 plus cost of parts (never more than a fiver) to fix it, and sell it on for fifty or sixty.
Never had any trouble selling. I was renting this big old house off a mate and a couple of students were looking for digs so I rented some spare rooms to them. The place turned into student central, I'd get in at night sometimes and there would be 15 people in the living room, all relaxing and listening to tunes. So I just used to stack the for sale stuff on the mantelpiece and it sold itself.
Nowadays the most I ask is what I paid, or usually a little less. But if I needed the cash I'd stick a little on top to try and make a drink out of it and I wouldn't feel guilty about it.

Same here Ant, broke even a couple of times, but mostly big losses. Only to be expected though as I take the hit buying new.

Never made profits but I am unlucky with money. I am usually impatient, end up paying too much and then sell cheap to get rid of it quick. I don't like stuff hanging around I don’t like having stuff sat round either. I’ve often sold stuff without even trying it, just because I had too much gear sat round. It sounds so lazy when I say it, but I think buy8ng became a habit for me and now I have found stuff I really like, I just couldn’t be bothered changing. My buying has slowed down to almost nothing now, and I hope it stays that way.

Could it be you've finally grown up and just want to listen to music.

morning ant spot on mate..i listen to music 8 hours a day EVERY day..radio 2 is always on either at home or work. i found out years ago most kit is shite anyway..trying to find the good stuff and to get it working with other kit is a tough job..even then if you manage it it's never jaw dropping unless the recording is top notch..most arnt top notch so it's just not worth messing with kit.

"My buying has slowed down to almost nothing now, and I hope it stays that way." Could it be you've finally grown up and just want to listen to music. If only You did get me thinking though: I believe it’s a combination of three things: 1. The hassle of getting stuff over here. I was buying and then bringing it over at a later stage. That meant by the time I got my hands on anything, the novelty had worn off. 2. The Sonneteers. The amp in particular just seems to make you forget about the sonics. It’s just so rewarding to listen to, I don’t want to look at anything else. Lots of past experience tells me that any change will break the spell. I suspect the CD player is every bit as good but I have never compared it. I have had other players sat here but there was no urge to switch. 3. Going full omni has been the icing on the cake: Maybe more than that. It doesn’t matter where you sit, stand or lie. The music doesn’t change. And so you just enjoy it for what it is. I don’t like sitting in one place or position for long. The sound has to “grab” me to keep me planted. Now that I don’t need such stimulus, I can stretch out, sit up, move round and it’s all still glorious. It’s liberating too. None of this stuff is expensive. A few years ago, my pride would have told me I needed a bigger, “better” system. I’ve been there though, and you need a big room, plus you need to listen at high levels to be worth it. I don’t want or need that experience. Again, I’ve been been there and ended up setting up a second system, which got listened to far more often.

It did occur to me that living abroad has limited your opportunities for purchasing, and also from your previous post on how much you were enjoying your present set up. I feel the same way with my NVA system, it sounds bloody good to my ears, wish I'd heard it before buying into the Linn/Naim bullshit, would have saved loads. Best not to look on ebay and just enjoy what you've got and if anything purchase more music.
