Looking for suggestions please on a simple bullet proof easy to use streamer (to include an embedded DAC).
An elderly neighbour is frustrated by the poor quality of sound that comes from her laptop when listening to Radio 3, Youtube and so forth. She already has a high quality stereo system with floorstanders etc. (I did not look at what they are but evidently very reasonable as her husband who put the system together was a keen audiophile apparently).
I need to recommend something to her that can be a set and forget solution. Something that will stream the usual culprits (Spotify, BBC, Tidal/Quboz etc) and if there are any issues she can simply turn it off and turn it back on. I don't think she would be up to fiddling around with complex settings. I would do the initial setup
Something that ideally comes with a dedicated remote and/or a dedicated app. Not sure where her router is so it would have to be wifi enabled.
I was thinking of recommending to her the Bluesound Node 2i. Not sure what budget she has, the Node 2i may be a bit rich.
Thoughts?

Yep grab a Node. Have had mine for nearly 6 years now and no problems. It is App based but you can get a BS remote or it will learn other remotes, I use my cdp remote for basic tasks.

Thanks guys
I'm familiar with the node but not the Yamaha. Looks interesting and seemingly cheaper. I did think perhaps an rpi or a tinkerboard (I have one lying around) with a dac but I imagine that will be complicated for her if things go down.

There's someone selling a Yam on the Wam 😉 Thanks Mikey. Good price and would do most of what she wants. Sadly lacks a toslink input (or indeed any external audio inputs). She would very much like to continue watching youtube concerts but wants to enjoy better sound. Her TV is a smart tv with toslink output. Old logitech touch, with server on rpi . Yes that potentially is a solution but I fear far to complicated for her to diagnose when things go down, what with having a mysqueezebox account etc, linking to an rpi etc. I've certainly not discussed the idea of having locally based files, only streamed stuff. does your neighbour have a smartphone for these apps ? many do not Yes I think so Phil. On a recent visit here when discussing a project we are in she pulled out what looked like a working phone with a screen. Probably one of those horrible Apple products called iPhone or something like that. (sorry I always love to take the p**s out of Apple stuff.)

I seem to be reading this a lot in the context of streaming and computer audio - is this a thing? Up to now my music has been served up very much with meat & two veg, with just the odd bit of Alexa action, and I do value reliability... does your neighbour have a smartphone for these apps ? many do not Yes I think so Phil. A decent USB DAC is maybe all that she needs. Take the USB output from her laptop (that she already knows how to use) into a good DAC, and job is done.
