OK this is a bit of a rant. Just came across another valve phono stage, the Andros PS1 Phonostage.
Oh this could be interesting, design engineer George Counnas grew up in Great Britain where as a young man he designed vacuum-tube circuits and worked for DECCA Navigator, one of Britain’s largest electronics companies, as part of a research and development team designing airborne navigational systems for the Royal Air Force.
That's where the excitement ends, for me anyway. It's just another 4 x ECC83/12AX7 passive equalisation valve phono stage with SUT's for the MC input. OK the reviews are good, ' It’s one of the loveliest-sounding electronic components I’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing. Almost miraculously, it seems to exhibit virtually no discernable electro-mechanical artifacts. Its sound is unbelievably smooth and velvety; harmonically rich, full, and vividly textured; marvellously rounded, tactile, and dimensional, with great body and solidity; and completely natural in its musicality and freedom from any of the usual sonic hype, audiophile style.' Gee whizz...
Wtf are ' electro-mechanical artifacts'?
Why aren't there more valve phono stages with a bit of innovation to them? So many ECC83/Passive/SUT designs, that frankly aren't up there with the best, even though the newest version of the Andros is nearly $5000.
Also why do manufacturers use the PS1 designation, it's so boring.

The more I see in the world beyond my door step I see lack of innovation, imagination and experimentation. Whether it be educational- my area of expertise- industrial design, architecture, music or hi-fi. Thankfully, if you look hard enough it is out there in hidden, often unexpected places.
AA is one of those places, and members keep developing and nurturing it. Keep up the great work Alan, and the other AA stars. You give us hope and, from it, a wealth of musical enjoyment.

Maybe it's because innovation comes from the bleeding edge and there's nowt more anachronistic than tubes.
I'd like to see a lovely all valve lcr phonostage with active rectification, multiple layers of local regulation and an offensively good solid state output buffer.
Throw in an automatic compensation for cart loading and you'd have a right thing.

Yeah , I’m no engineer by any stretch but I remember reading a whole rundown of the complexity of the thrax on another webpage and even I thought , Sh#t that seems like a lot that could go wrong , but the sound that comes out of them is bloody amazing .
I was slumming it with the Whest 2.2 back then 😉, now I have the BBU It might not seems as big of a performance difference .

Just listening to vinyl at the moment and the descending sun just struck the rack rather well.
