You've inhaled too much solder I think......tape? 🤦🏻♂️ 🤣 One major factor is that Juno records have just had a massive blow out sale on some very hard to find tapes. Stuff not available on any other format, literally. It's a lot of ambient/soundscape stuff, a lot of which has a fair amount of tape-noise and flutter on the recording deliberately. Logic suggests that using a tape deck as a source will lend itself well to this 'lo-fi' material. Having said that I can remember my dad's old BX2 sounding perfectly good with a lot of audiophile recordings. Some very good dynamics and low end to be had. A cliche for sure but it just sounded so 'analogue'. Beefy, rich etc. If I want pure clarity and transparency the Soekris is only a foot away! It's a different way of listening for sure, like I say on a lot of my kind of musical preferences I think it'll sound awesome.

Haha . . . Chaps of little faith I see. Oh well . . . . I'm still doin it! If it were me, I'd by an epic one, and use it to convert those tapes to digital. Short term purchase, but then you save yourself long term degradation of the material. I get why you've done it. I'd love to find the 90s tape packs from Mickey Finn, Grooverider and Jumpin Jack Frost....I'd digitise them, and blast them on the regular.

Used to love mucking around with tapes when I was young. Making compilations, recording music off the telly etc. Didn't have a clue what I was doing re bias and various metal types mind.
Go for it!

Of the three you listed I'd go for the Yammie.
I guess this is mainly a fun thing not a sound quality thing? If it is a sound quality thing then it's Nakamichi or nothing. I know there's some decks from Pioneer that are as good as Naks but they are far more obscure and hard to find.
I gave mine away years ago now not missed it for a second although it did get a lot of use back in the day.

I guess this is mainly a fun thing not a sound quality thing? I'm not going to sit here and say the SQ isn't of consequence as otherwise I'd just buy a walkman . . . . but I'm not going to be sitting there critiquing it most of the time, it's mainly just to play some rare tapes. Also an opportunity to add a chunky piece of Japanese hardware with meters and lights to the stack . . . .

Sony pro walkman worth looking at, seem to recall they were as good as most of the Naks for wow and flutter. No use if proper VU meters are required though.

Looks wise it has to be the Pioneer, even though the door has been changed, I'll guess the Yammie will be better sq wise although it will cost you double, whichever one you go for enjoy it.

You are welcome to borrow my Nakamichi DR-2 to see if this itch is something you want to continue with. I'd like to keep it as I occasionally need to digitise tapes.
Just have to pay 2 way courier.

Wow that's incredibly generous of you Edward. I could digitise what I've got (only about 10 tapes so far) then decide if I want to shell out a bit more and look out for a proper one. I'll take you up on that thanks Will PM you my address and just let me know the cost of postage etc if that's okay with you. Post at your leisure of course. Thanks again, love this forum!

Yes they did but unfortunately by the time I was a lad it was a pretty poor brand by comparison, only fit to sit along side Bush and Sansui in Curry's.... A long time after tape had it's day. I was reading today that some Akai decks have heads that simply do not wear? Not sure if that translates into them sounding that good but interesting all the same.

Update -
Picked up the deck from Edward at his lovely home with a very welcoming cuppa, always a bonus.
Thanks again Edward, really looking forward to giving it a listen later.
Cheers

I've not many tapes but held onto my Walkman Pro cassette deck from back in the day when no one wanted them as it is just so kitsch... They sound great but nowadays getting expensive as seem to have picked up a following... Good luck.

Still have my Sony TC-FX150, have it in the rack in my 2nd system. Had to do a belt change and service 18 months ago but runs nice when I think to use it with the few classical tapes I picked up in a charity shop. Like a muppet I had dumped all my 80s & 90s tapes 15 years ago as not played them due to CD.

This is the only thing I still have that will play cassette tapes, I bought it in about 1986, it's maybe had ten hours put on it:
