Hi all, after upgrading the power supply for my humble Arcam rPhono, errr . . . phono stage, I think I will follow some of the advice to upgrade the internal signal caps too (and maybe any others anyone suggests!). Firstly though I need to identify them and their values, anyone know what the ID: "WFA 105J" translates to? There are no other identifying serials/values on them apart from being 250v. and an "H2/H3" and on one an "H4" which seems weird to me. A search of some 400v Panasonic caps (which are identical in appearance) using the" WFA 105J" identification indicates that they may well be 10uF value (which would make sense really). Any pointers or advice much appreciated. Cheers

It does Kevin - I think they are 1.0uF even though the datasheet seems to exclusively refer to 450v but maybe that's what all the newer versions are rated to. Thanks a lot.

The same probably exists for the 250V version. Somewhere like Mouser or Farnese probably have the data sheets.

1 microfarad 5%. At least you know they are metallised polypropylene so not too shabby.

Yes I know they are not bottom pile caps for sure, I'm considering swapping them for these Clarity Cap ESA's though. www.hificollective.co.uk/components/claritycap_esa.htmlThey should fit fine and I've used them successfully in phono stages before. Good idea or leave as is???

When I've done speaker recaps I find THIS REFERENCE a good resource to decode cap values.

Take one out and measure it. Good call Might see if can measure end to end on the lead outs without having to remove, although there's not much area to get to and board removal is a bit of a pig.... Can I get a value from it whilst it's still in the circuit?

Take one out and measure it. But surely if the cap has drifted a lot the measurement will also be off? Maybe my question reveals my ignorance on these matters.

I doubt it will be far out at all, I only wanted to know the value as I couldn't tell from the letters and numbers, seems it's now been identified as 1uF so I'm sure it'll be around that value anyway. I'm not replacing due to age or wear (it's only a 3 years old with little use) just looking to upgrade them really, or explore the feasibility of doing so.

ah right. I was not paying attention - did not realise it was a relatively new item. As you were.
