I already like this site but being a bit of a techno duffer would like to reply to peoples comments but don’t seem to be able to work out how to do it. I thought if I saw a post and then just pressed quote that would work but it does not appear to . Or it does and I just cannot tell it does . I normally engage my two grown up daughters to help me in this kind of venture ( sort out dads passwords / dads lost his emails how does he get them back etc etc ) but their withering sarcasm about being a hi fi saddo is too big a price so please tell me on here . I am quite self deprecating and see the funny side about me so will not be offended if you point out the flippin obvious to me .

Hi Mike Using the quote function can give a bit of context, but can also lead to long posts Sometimes just better to hit ‘reply to topic’ and start typing.

Happy that there is another techno numpty come to join us, unfortunately I don't have a younger up to date person to help out, although I am proud to say I've just learnt how to post a photo, but still cannot post an image from another site One tip when pressing the quote, don't type immediately after the post, you will see it is in a block, go underneath and start typing. You can also link to a specific member, I don't know how to do that, but it does save repetitive posts as SteveW remarked. Don't feel your question is to simple to post, you may not be the only one who doesn't know/understand what is being talked about, and finally don't be offended by any of my posts , they are, after all, to keep some members (who will remain nameless ) feet on the ground, and to hopefully make you smile.

Yeah, I feel your pain, Mike. Techno stuff can do my head in as well. A suggestion if you want to respond to someone and can't get the quote thing to work - just start your post with their ID (so jandl100 for me). That way folks will know who you are responding to.

..... To be honest, the quote thing is used WAY too much on this forum anyway.
You get a 10 paragraph post repeated that you have to scroll on through, only to have a brief response, maybe just a 1 liner, at the bottom. It rather does my head in at times!

I think a good mantra going forward on this is:
- If replying/posting a response directly appropriate to the topic/original question > reply to topic
- If responding to a specific post within the thread/to a specific person > Quote (then if it's a long one shave it down a bit/get rid of the pictures to save a bit of space). Or input their username which alerts them to your response.
If you don't know how to do it or can't for whatever reason don't worry, I'm sure everyone would rather have the input there in some way, shape or form than not.
Both methods are useful as threads can tend to drift a bit, which is absolutely fine in my opinion so long as relevance towards the original post is not completely lost!

For direct reference to a member without dragging excess comment with your reply then use the following format: @muppet the @ symbol attached to the username sends them a notification that they've been referenced.

Proboards software (which this forum runs on) has a useful feature of being able to multiquote. Specifically if one wants to reference several posts within a thread simply select each post (use 'Select Post' within the gear icon) and on the last post to quote simply press 'Quote'. The software will then create multiple quotes within one message.
