It just struck me today: I have no family connections to hifi, didn’t inherit any gear or any records from parents or siblings and have no one to leave my hifi or music to. My parents are dead decades ago, my brother and sister are a generation older than me and their only offspring is a single niece whom I’ve met once when she was 8 (now probably 20 maybe).
It got me wondering what it’s like to inherit kit from a parent, or even inherit their love of hifi and music. Also whether anyone has given any thought to what will happen to their hifi and music collection when their time is up.
Cheery subject, I know, but not one I’ve seen discussed before.

My Dad was a huge music fan but had little interest in any music after the early 70s.
All through my early years all I heard were Free, The Beatles, The Who and the Stones.
He never bought a decent stereo, always just whatever they had at Currys etc.
When he died in 2008, I had the LPs but didn't take them to my house until almost 5 years later. It was this that got me back into vinyl with a rotel TT and NAD amp I bought for £36.
I take my boys, 5 & 3 to car boots, record shops etc and get them looking for Vinyl so hopefully they get the bug too.

It must be good to be able to pass on the interest. My dad wash car enthusiast but he doesn’t when so I didn’t catch that bug. My big brother was a prog fan and we share different a bedroom even though he’s 10 years older. I think that putt me right off prog tbh.

My parents weren't very interested in music; we didn't have a record player until I was 12. AFAIK none of my three siblings have anything more sophisticated/expensive than a mini-system. Our two daughters both like music, but an iPod/laptop is good enough for them, so the hifi thing starts and ends with me.

I'm thinning down my collection of Hi-Fi. I have far too much. By the time I've finished there won't be a lot for anybody to inherit.
My dad was an audio buff and a major electronics wiz. He was military head at the Cranwell secret radar research extablishment during WW2. He left mountains of valves, transformers, capacitors and other components when he popped his clogs. All accumulated through the fifties and sixties.

I’m still at a loss to define how and why I ended up a hifi enthusiast. There were no family influences. I never wanted kids so I really have no future generations to share my interest with. Being abroad has really forced me to thin out the bits I have. When I go, I can only hope my gear finds it’s way to someone who loves it as much as I do,

My parents weren't music lovers, and I think it was me pestering them at the age of 12 to buy a music system. If memory serves it was a Sanyo all in one. I have no children so no one to leave my record collection and gear to. Same as Westie, can only hope it all finds its way to a loving home.

It's just 'stuff', really. I'm not mithered what happens to my belongings once I'm gone. My elder daughter will want most of my books, but the hifi and most of the music will probably be sold off/given to charity shops.

My sister collects Expensive Jewellery and also designer dolls. They are coming to me one day and are worth serious money. I have no idea what to do with them. Selling them seems wrong. Keeping them requires 2 large rooms dedicated to them and some specialist insurance cover. If I’m still overseas, it will be quite a responsibility to take on. She loves every piece and has nobody else to leave them to, she’s a generation older than me, so it will likely be something I will face sometime. She’s still collecting so it will only grow.
I guess this is what it must feel like when you aren’t into hifi and get left a load of expensive kit.

I inherited a daft sum when my mother passed almost 20 years ago. I’d rather have her back alive and healthy any day. It carries a weight with it,

You might’ve missed it but I bought an Orbe a few months back and it sat for 2 months. I couldn’t be arsed to mount an arm and cart. It was really nice in the flesh. I gave it to a mate who loves it. Within an hour of me dropping it off at his door, it was singing. I regret not trying it tbh, but he’s a great mate so I’m happy for him.

I inherited a daft sum when my mother passed almost 20 years ago. I’d rather have her back alive and healthy any day. It carries a weight with it, I definitely share that sentiment. We've just had a bereavment and I'd turn the clock back if I could. Just wishful thinking I'm afraid.
