I can't imagine any situation where I'd need to buy a stamp. Surprised they even still exist.

Forms and applications that require a signature may need posting, I've brought back from Cambodia a pension enquiry for a friend that had to have his signature.

I had to post a cheque today. It is very unusual for me to have to do this, as I used to be able to pay over the phone with my bank card, but the insurance company stopped this.

I remember going to the bank once a fortnight on my lunch hour to cash a cheque in order to get 'walking around money'. Did that for years, then they closed the branch and I had to get a 'cashpoint card.'
Still got a couple of cheque books but no idea how long it has been since I wrote a cheque. Must be at least a decade.

I've just written one for 5p for a final demand from our property maintenance factors cos we employ a private company to cut the housing estate grass as the firm that built the houses didn't have the council adopt it ðŸ˜
5p demand in a 6 page (headed paper) letter, must be paid within 21 days, yeah right you'll wait!

bought 2 books of stamps last week as folks still like cards and companies sometimes like signed documents returned to them ... like mortgage companies

Must be at least a decade. Last time I got a cheque was a couple of years ago, from a customer who had no cash and didn't trust online banking either. It was then that I discovered that all of the local branches had closed. Which meant a 30 minute drive into town, £1.80 on the short-stay car park, and a homeless bloke outside the bank guilt-tripping me into getting a tea and a sausage roll for him and his dog. Followed by a five day wait for the bloody cheque to clear. Some things, like "Last of the Summer Wine" should stay in the past.

Online banking apps now let you pay cheques in on your smartphone which is blooming handy. I’ve had to pay 3 or 4 in the last few months and the app saves a trip to the high street 🙂

I can't imagine any situation where I'd need to buy a stamp. Surprised they even still exist. My dad has to post a copy of his monthly earnings ( small private pension ) to the local council every month to keep his benefits right. About time they accepted it online

IME local councils have zero interest in doing anything more efficiently. If there's a shortfall in income their solution is always to raise their existing charges and introduce new ones.

Sorry guys, have to disagree about councils, as a local councillor I know how hard SOME councillors and officers work to keep costs down and work efficiently. Obviously can't comment on the council you are mentioning Macca, but if disappointed in them you could contact your local councillor and speak to them and ask them to sort out the ridiculous situation of your father having tp post a copy of his monthly earnings. ow back to the music

Nothing to apologise for.
I'm sure there are a number of dedicated council employees and councillors in every town or city, but IMO they're shovelling Sh#t against the tide.
