The big news of the day, I've put my NVA amps and speakers up for sale (you can see the ad here www.hifisubjectivist.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=51391&p=228920#p228920 ) Just fancied a change, I blame Jandl, who by the way has been kind enough to offer a pair of TAD 5881 power tubes for me to try. I've also advertised a pair of Golden Lion KT88's (my brother's that I've acquired ) since I want a pair of EL34's or 6L6's to try.

Well most of my stuff has now sold and been replaced although still waiting for my new speakers, which are now in the country Top shelf: Project cdt and Auralic Aries 3rd shelf: Soekris dac 2nd shelf: MP301 amp and Power supply for Soekris Bottom shelf: LPS for cdt and LPS for Aries Speakers: Mark Audio Cesti MBR's An update on my hearing/tinnitus, I've been to the Audiology dept today and had another hearing test, appears my hearing is good for the mid/lower frequencies, but the higher ones is somewhat diminished. They recommended I try an hearing aid, so am now waiting for an appointment for a fitting which should be in the next few weeks.

what's the deal with the Project CDT? Looks pretty big just to be a CD transport, and that big screen.

It must be an optical illusion, it's only 20cm square, and I will add, to remove the cd is no easy task if you have big fingers.

Screen is still pretty big and fancy though, at least compared to the Audiolab I have that just has a little dot-matrix thing that I think they must have bought a job lot from the 1980s it's that crude.

Hopefully they can fit a decent aural equaliser and get you back to listening with enjoyment.

It's perfectly normal for high frequencies to drop off with age.
At 66, I can hear 8khz but not 9khz. That's a bit better than average. Tbh, I don't notice the fall off when listening to music at all.
Do you know how high you go, Dave?

I checked how high I can hear up to using a frequency generator on a website, playing through my computer, not super accurate, but gives you a good idea.
I have mild hearing loss and tinnitus, can sympathise with all you say. Doesn't affect how I enjoy music thankfully

I did one of those laptop and headphone tests online a couple of years ago. My upper limit isn't as high as Jerry's (about 5 or 6kHz iirc). Doesn't really spoil my listening, though some sounds I am familiar with from my younger years (breaking glass on Dire Straits' "Private Investigations" is a good example) have all but disappeared.
I did briefly wonder whether boosting the higher frequencies somehow would be worthwhile, but a couple of things put me off:
1. It may may cause further damage to my hearing, and
2. The cat would hate me and probably leave home, as would Mrs. Pony, who has hearing like a bat.
Be sure to let us know how you go on with the hearing aids Dave.

I am still lucky enough to have good hearing, even though I work in a noisy environment. Peltor Optime III work really well. I have my hearing tested regularly, and at the moment, I have not lost much. My last hearing test was amusing, as apparently the results meant I was stone deaf. The person running the test had forgotten to plug the headphones in properly.
I wish you gents the best of luck in finding something that increases your enjoyment of the music. I hope I never end up there, but you never know as we get older.

My pre amp valve convertors arrived today so I've now put in a pair of Mullard EF86 mesh valves and am very happy with them right from the off. My next job will be deciding which pre and power amp valves will be in the final mix, anyway here's a photo of the new valves:-

They do look the business with those gold convertors underneath, I've been using the tubes that came with the amp since one of the GE 5693's guiding pins broke, although now glued back into place so will have to decide which is my favourite. Then there is the battle between the all TAD's EL34's, 6L6's and 5881's

I did bring it with me to our get together, didn't bother to take out since it was a large room and only 7watts per channel, it does sound a lot more though.

It was a big room Dave, even the BT2 and 686 combo was a few notches away from max settings. Unless you had giant horns I think it would have got mushy very quickly. For normal rooms though, paired with anything over 91-92db it'll be fine for average levels.

Another problem arises, my speakers, ordered from China, have not cleared Customs, the seller is going send me a telephone number of the shipping company which I will call as and when: Does anyone have any experience with this problem and at the end of the day who is responsible, me the buyer, or the seller in getting them to me?

The onus is on the seller to get them to you, but i reckon there will be something that needs paying. Where did you buy them?

Not always. Sometimes I get an invoice before they will deliver. Depends how much it is etc. Could also be an issue with the paperwork and they can't figure out how much to charge. Give them a bell. Interesting speakers btw

You may get an invoice for D&T further down the line. Shipping is the vendor's problem right up until you sign for them. I hate those private sellers who they say 'Shipping will be at your risk.' No it won't mate. Collection only that's fine but if you ship it to me it's your responsibility if it doesn't make it.
