This is a thread dedicated to all those near drunken ebay purchases which did or didn't happen.
OK, to start things off, I was looking into buying a LP12, please don't shoot me.

Consider you shot and make sure you wash your mouth (and mind) out with carbolic soap.............

Great thread, drunkenly nodded off and tapped a buy now on stupidly expensive valve, luckily I feel asleep by the time the paypal confirmation of payment button came up. 🥶

Pulling the trigger to the tune of £3'200 for a Tron Seven Ultimate, thinking because it was originally £8.4k it would be loads better than the Tron Seven Basic mm + MFA Baby Classic SUT I was using. WRONG!!! Was maybe 2% better, and I took a bath when I moved it on.

Only got to look at my Amazon buying history to see when I was pissed. I mean.. 3 kilos of popping corn. Really? Must have had the munchies. Oh yeah… 9 bottles of Avon Soft and Lovely. It’s a great mosquito repellent.. but there’s enough there to last 20 years. And then there’s the vinyl.. that I thought I needed. Just cos Laura Marling is in a band with some beardy bloke is not a good enough reason to go buying the latest vinyl. Even if they signed it.

I've read some still prefer the Gyro over the Orbe, maybe it is because of the spinning disc's and the Orbe is maybe not the best looking tt out there, but each to his own.

Whoever designed it doesn't understand valves and their characteristics.

I also remember the disdain you had for the noise it produced and the fact you corrected the RIAA circuit for me prior to its eventual sale.

I do wonder if it is GT that actually does the circuit design?
Considering he has been churning out valve based gear for quite a while there are critical errors in the calculation of the requisite RIAA time constants. Just saying..

It HAS been said, so let's leave that particular hornets nest alone lol

maybe it was that way deliberately? Don't know much about GT but I'm pretty sure he's in the 'accurate doesn't equal musical' camp.

Using that phonostage is the only time I have managed to get audible distortion in a tweeter. The Yamaha NS1000 almost Sh#t itself. I Sh#t myself as I thought I'd broke the speaker.

you didn't think it was but others might think it does.
I've heard what I thought were some terrible systems at shows but other people were saying things like 'If only I had the money' or 'If only I had the space.'
Or that one demo when just as I was thinking 'Christ I wouldn't give buttons for this' the bloke sat in front of me told his mate 'I'm buying these.'
Just no accounting for it mate.

I think it very much depends on what you have heard before and where your system sits in the pecking order.
Given a rating from 1 to 10 then someone with a 4 system is going to be wowed by a 6 whereas those with experience above 6 aren't.

We just aren't all looking for the same thing. Some people's idea of a good sound is worlds away from mine. Took me a long time to realise that but it's true.

I know that back in 2016 i went to a charity music evening run by Audio T, at the time I was running an OL Aurora Gold mk2, Encounter3C & Hana SL, IA PS1.2SE, CXC, Node2 & mk1 LA4 pre into a 4 pack of Tag Maclaren 125m and my Usher Dancer Mini 2 DMDs. The system they'd setup for the evening was Orb, sme V, Dynavector TKR, Naim electronics Inc Statements with many many PSUs, Chard Sarum SCs and some 7 foot tall Dyne Audio speakers. Apparently the RRP of the kit was £297k, it sounded shite, shout, no proper soundstage or imaging, my circa £22k rrp setup was way better to my ears. I was expecting to be WOW'd instead I struggled to see where the additional £275k had been spent.

Your system has changed somewhat in the last 5 yrs Lurch, even discounting your latest speakers and amp.
