The 1st photo looks like it's okay, but the 2nd (once you zoom in) appears to show a large gob of black shite stuck/burnt onto the tip of the stylus. I would give it a good wet clean and use some of the 'Green stuff' (3 - 5 micron sandpaper) unless, ofcourse you have an Audiotechnica AT637 Ultrasonic stylus cleaner. If you've got one of these, ultrasonic stylus pens then a drop of juice and a 10 second burst should sort it. Once the sites gone that cart should sound pretty damn good as there doesn't appear to be any shoulders.

I have been using a wet cleaner - the Clearaudio one. Typically once per week I apply some directly with the brush which is attached to the lid, then put a couple of drops onto a carbon fibre stylus brush and brush with that as well. So not quite sue how it can still be dirty, but hey ho.

Arg, Killian is no longer servicing UK customers as he’s had too much grief with customs following Brexit. That’s a bummer. Anyone know any good UK based retippers? Expert Stylus Company has been recommended to me. There’s also a chap on Vinyl Engine (Cafe Latte) who seems to know his onions, but he’s in Australia, so not sure I fancy that. Bummer aint the word, gutted! Only ever had superb service from him and a lovely bloke to do business with, not to mention the great value and result taking my Cadenza Black to the next level with the FGS re-tip. Not sure what I'll do next but will continue to enjoy it til such time.

The problem isn't just dirt. The pressure + high frequency leads to some deposits getting burnt on, so more extreme cleaning methods are required, if you've not got access to an AT 637 or similar then the green stuff I mentioned above (used to be sold at Linn dealers) is the next best thing. I've still got mine that came as a freebie with a hifi mag in the late 80s.

Some of the diamond cleaning putty is also good. I can’t remember what it is called, but you just lower the cartridge into it, and it keeps it clean without any risk of dissolving glue, or getting liquid up a hollow cantilever.
Found it - Rodico.

I'm not disagreeing with you Kevin, since I've never used it, but I've also rea some bad reports about this type of cleaner. I think it was The Missing Link that sold it, don't know if they still do.

The missing link sell the vinyl passion stylus cleaner. It is not Rodico putty, but some kind of sticky gel. Rodico is used for precision work by jewellers and watch makers.

There is also a premium version, which is grey. How do you use that on a stylus then? The only thing I can think of is lightly dragging it over the surface, but that seems a bit dicey!

I didn’t think of that too, but didn’t see that doing anything. I’ll get some of the same stuff and give it a go.

I use a cartridge brush, it has course but fine bristles and gets all of the crap off the stylus and cantilever with no damage. You should never use any liquid as it can affect the glue (as can the sticky stuff you are all looking to us.....) Been doing it this way for 30 plus years and never had any issues.

Some stylus manufacturers sell liquid stylus cleaners, like the Clearaudio one I use. I will assume that they’ve been developed not to do any damage. I use a stylus brush before every record but to the point a few posts back, if there’s some crud burnt on, a brush isn’t going to shift it!

By all means use it if you are happy to do so but for me no. And what state are your records in to get crud 'burnt on'?? If you look after your records then a brush should be all you need.

I used to just clean all second hand records before playing and later decided that I should clean all new ones as well, so I went back through everything I had and cleaned them all. Now new purchases are always cleaned first. So right now they are very clean, but when I first had the Cadenza, I would play records that had been purchased new and not cleaned (beyond a brush each time). I am surprised to learn that there is crud burnt on, but better trained eyes than mine spotted it on one of my pictures ( lurch )!

Fair enough - always cleaned before being played after being bought (new/secondhand) then cleaned periodically (not before every play, but every year or so) Never had burnt on crud before, just lucky I suppose (reminds me that I need a new USB microscope to check )
