Popped into Aldi this afternoon and picked up a digital temperature controlled soldering station for £19.99
Looks to be well made and comes with a range of tips plus two small reels of solder.

I'll have a play with it tomorrow and see if it makes light work of 6mm speaker cable. Be nice if it does as it gets up to temperature very quickly, whereas my ye olde Maplins station takes an age to heat up and loses it smartish on big jobs like 6mm cable.

There’s nothing worse than trying to solder thick speaker cables with an iron that isn’t hot enough. If this one works on 6mm cable it’s a gift, never mind a bargain.
