Am I the only one that thinks this is a complete waste of time? Below is my 2nd post on the thread so you know where I stand, and you have easy access to read the whole 5 pages, but why would you want to?

I see the point in it, its purely for information. And for knowledge its interesting to see and might not seem beneficial right now but 10 years down the line you'd have hard data evidence that you could look back on and see: trends in the hobby, changes of perspective, see if the average age is rising with the current members getting older or the flip and see it plateuing or even falling (we know that later likely ain't gonna happen 🤣)
I think its a great idea, using something like a Survey monkey or something would help make it easy to fill out and easier to collect the data. Rather than it being useful right away I think the useful ness of this will come with age.

10 years down the line - half the members on here will be lucky if they're not pushing up the daisies then. What on earth do you need a census for from a very limited number of mostly aging audiophiles. Can you really imagine the larger Audio companies and the music industry really wanting to lay there hands on a Wigwam HiFi forum census to see how trends have changed over the last 20yrs and then decide were their future products are to be aimed.

Wow, this has really rattled your cage hasn't it, Dave! I'm not at all sure what the fuss is about. If it does take place, here's an idea.... don't take part if you don't want to! Must admit I think it's a decent idea. Just as a bit of mildly interesting fun to watch how trends evolve over the years from within one of the larger online hifi communities.

It hasn't rattled my cage Jerry, what is has done is make me wonder how grown men of a certain age, and whom I would have given a lot of respect to, acting as though it is something of importance, and it is going to be useful for members to look back on. You've been on the forums much longer than myself, being honest I thought you a bit daft constantly changing your kit, but then I realised how much you enjoyed it, and yes I can see it to be beneficial in many respects, so I suppose I've taken an interest in your different set-ups. The same can be said for other members on the forums I frequent, there a certain individuals whom you take more interest in than others, and you pretty much know their kit. If I wanted to know something about which amplifier you preferred with a certain pre you used 5yrs ago Jerry, I would send a pm to ask you, I would not be looking at a census. I can only assume some must believe being an audiophile is far more important than it really is and that they must complete a census. If they are daft enough to do one let em get on with it and make themselves look more foolish than most non audiophiles think we are.

I see where you are coming from Dave. As a bit of fun I don't see the issue but I agree that no useful data is likely to come out of it.
Maybe if the questions were very specific and well thought out and the survey was run around multiple forums so you got several thousand responses you might do though.
If you look at marketing questions they tend to be along the lines of 'How much are you planning to spend on hi-fi in the next 12 months?' - and then a range of options to tick. Something like that with thousands of replies you'd have something then I think. Although what you do with it is another matter.

I suspect you are over-thinking it, Dave. I don't think anyone is taking it seriously in the manner that you suggest. I don't think there is any intention of providing any useful marketing information to anyone. As Martin suggests, the number of responses will be several orders of magnitude too small for that anyway. I think it's just an approximate way of tracking changing attitudes to 'things hifi' within an audiophile community. I have to confess that I would find that of moderate interest. Worth half an hour a year of my time to contribute to it? Yes, I think so. Worth the amount of time that the originator of the idea will have to put into it to make it work? Ah, now there's a question! But my guess is that the numbers of people responding will be way too small for anything very sensible to come out of it. I'd expect low double figures, which would probably be inadequate to track trends meaningfully. ... And yup, you win your choice of coconut or teddy bear for realising that my box swap habit is pure fun and interest, and in no way concerned with an attempt to cure a desperate unhappiness with my system. ... And if you asked me what amplifier went best with something I had 5 years ago, I feel fairly sure that I wouldn't have a clue!

Of course my comment regarding HiFi manufacturers and record companies was pure sarcasm. I thought I was going daft, all these grown men wanting a census, even for a bit of fun, then Fourlegs agreed it was a waste of time, but more posts were made all thinking it was a good idea, and as for you remembering five years back Jerry, of what went well with a certain amp, you bloody well could

It helps them sell advertising if they know their audience.

Possibly Simon, but mostly I, and I think you, already know the audience, 2nd hand hifi might do ok advertising on there Only joking since a good number have spent a fair old chunk.

Hey Dave - the Wam Census is now live, have you filled it in yet? The way it's going there could well be over 100 participants.

I completed it even though I'm not a member.
I think I would have asked different questions, not sure that some of them have any real usefulness. Still it will be interesting to see the results.

The current survey covers your first two already. Although I get the impression that these days a lot of people have both vinyl and streaming.

Hey Dave - the Wam Census is now live, have you filled it in yet? The way it's going there could well be over 100 participants. Unsurprisingly I have not even looked at the thread, I do wish more members would do the same when they are not interested in a thread but still continue to thread spoil, cable recommendations are number one for this. Anyway Jerry, and I will include you Oli will not be winding me up for sure, over 100 participants, wow, it's going to be really meaningful then
