From a young age I have always preferred music to the sound of the TV and just like most here music takes us back to our long lost youth. I have always been content to listening to music of my phone, the Tele or a wireless speaker until a few years ago. An old friend of mine has always been into audio equipment and dabbles in the audio DIY world. I could listen to his systems for hours. They sounded wonderful but I never had the money to invest in something like he had/has.
Recently my partner has been wanting that same level of detail in our listening. So here I am......needing your help. I have a budget and I know what I want but not what to get.
If you can help then that would be great.
Regards Me

Hello me
Wecome , we all talk a right load of cobblers but should be able to help you set up. Be useful to know size of budget, room and what music you like to listen. Also your preferred source, streaming, records etc. 🙂
Also do you want to by new or are you happy with second hand kit?
cheers

My budget is £3000 I like to stream music but also like to listen to vinyls (an old friend of mine builds and upgrades turntables) and I have fell in love with the sound of vinyl. My musical taste can change from 80 synth, rock and pop to listening to some Motown. The room is my kitchen, diner and family room. It is 9m X 3m. I could put it in the living room but that is not where I tend to listen to music. I don't mind if it is not the finest equipment straight away because in most things in life I would be looking at upgrade paths, and no, I don't mind buying used. Regards Me

No issue if not...just being personable =) I think we can offer some sage advice. Something like an all in one streamer and amplifier, A Turntable with built in phonostage and Kef LS50 speakers should put you in the right ballpark i think, especially if just starting out.

The name is Andrew. Thank you for helping. I have been looking at an NVA amp as I have heard some good things in another forum and I have looked at their website but with out listening I wouldn't know. I have so been told that a good quality streamer will come a s a DAC as well in case I want to add a CD player later or at the very least will have a built in CD transport so that it can do god knows what? The turntable..... I know nothing about. If I was still on speaking terms with my old friend I would have asked him. Like I said any help I can get I will take. Think of me like an empty vase to fill with knowledge....or bullshit. I would not know either way 😀

I believe NVA do a starter setup which could be ideal for you, pricewise. No idea how it sounds but savvypaul owns NVA and is a casual member here. Maybe a message or email to him could prove useful. You could use a very simple Raspberry Pi setup for streaming. Something like a JustBOOM....they were £30 last time i looked and i bet a member here has one lying around that they aren't using. As i said a TT with inbuilt phonostage would be wise. They come pre setup i think. Oliver

£3K to spend and don't mind buying used you can get a lot more than a 'starter system'.
My whole system was only a bit more than 2 grand, okay that doesn't include a turntable but you can get a lot of turntable for a grand.
Big room to put it in too, sky's the limit really.
Welcome.

Welcome Andrew £3k is a handsome amount to spend on a system. If your going 2nd hand, then you accept some degree of risk in terms of no warranty etc .. but most of us do. If it was brand new (and I’ve been looking into this in some detail recently) Then if it were me I’d look at a Bluesound Power node ( think it has a phono input, but better check), Kef LS50’s and then an Audio Technica turntable with a cartridge for around a grand (not up to speed with the latest)
However there are innumerable permutations and if your keen on an NVA system I’m sure someone will recommend speakers that would match nicely.

I'm not up with this new fangled metric system but isn't 9x3 metres 28 foot by 10 foot? I wouldn't suggest a toy speaker like the LS50 for a space that size.
No idea why so many people are so keen on them.
Spend £3K new £600 of that goes on VAT. At the very least the speakers should be bought s/h especially as it's a buyer's market right now.

Yes, but that space also encompasses a kitchen and 2 other spaces. Sounds open plan to me and that then will depend where he's sitting in relation to the speakers.

Hi Andrew and welcome, there really is something about the vinyl sound isn't there.... I'm not particularly knowledgeable on the streaming aspect so will leave that to the learned here, but as far as a turntable goes, I'd recommend a Technics SL1200 (silver) / SL1210 (black) or one of the similar offerings by Technics. I've had a ton of experience with these over the years and they are simply one of the most solid and easiest turntables to use which is a really good thing as you dont just stick a record on the platter, lower the arm/needle and play - there is an important set-up aspect. Basically, a tonearm and stylus will need aligning, for good sound among other reasons, which is fairly straight forward once you are informed and these decks go some way to help making that pretty much a doddle, thankfully. Feel free to post questions and ask away / utilise the wealth of knowledge on board

If we have an idea what your friend's system was that you were so keen on it would be a help to recommending you what to buy.

Thanks, Oliver, Andrew is in touch with me by email. I agree with the suggestions that secondhand is where the very best value is often at, especially for speakers and turntables. macca The VAT portion of £3k is £500 - £2500 plus 20%. I know you like 'correct' measurements, these days Paul

Well, this morning I had a good conversation with SavvyPaul from NVA and at some point I will be arranging a demonstration to hear some of his amps (plus tea and sandwiches).
I am really starting to get excited about this. Usually I leave this level of excitement to when I am getting a new motorbike but I am genuinely looking forward to this.

Good point The room is open plan in the sense it is one big space. Kitchen one end, dining space and then a sofa and a place for the kids to play. There is a 5 meter long wall of glass (bifold doors) that opens up to the garden. There is another door on the opposite side that leads to the hall way and living room. I described this to Paul and the room I intend to listen to the music has a fair bit of echo and I was advised on ways that can reduce this by Paul.

Doing that makes you think 3k is not a lot when it comes to buying quality equipment. If I had not visited the various forums I don't think I would have realised this.

Shame that a TT is required as that really eats into the budget. I would have said go for a Technics SL1200 but I had no idea of the prices they are fetching until I just checked, you're looking at £600 for one. Even so add an Achromat and Nagaoka MP110 that's about £800 total which still leaves a fair bit. Streaming - laptop into a Topping E30, assuming you already have a laptop that's £140 for the Topping DAC. So £2060 for amp and speakers. Krell integrated here www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124927283527?hash=item1d163f1147:g:0vwAAOSwQMNhJKcz for just under a grand although no phono stage so need to budget maybe another £250 for a decent one of those. It does mean that speaker choice won't be constrained by the amp though so that gives total freedom for the most important bit of the system and £800 to spend there. Massive amount of choice there, overwhelming really. But just limiting it to what's on ebay UK I'd be having these Tannoys at £500 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234239328638?hash=item3689c0817e%3Ag%3Aqj4AAOSwKIBhauex&LH_BIN=1Leaves £300 so a bit of cash spare for cables and also maybe a bit of flexibility on the cartridge or phono stages. I'd guarantee that system would sound devastatingly good from both sources and would play at very high levels with no strain (if that's a requirement). Buying new you'd be looking at ten grand to match it. At least.

After speaking to Paul my main intention is to concentrate on the the amp, speakers and streamer. I expect to do most of my listening through the streamer because of the ease of use and look at getting a turntable at a later date. I think one of my main problems is that the speakers are going to be placed close to a wall. I have two small children and I don't want them playing round the speakers and knocking them over so my speaker selection has to take that into consideration, although, the link to the speakers you gave do look mighty fine though I feel something that big would be wasted on me.

Good selection that Ollie although I wouldn't pay that much for the Denon, it's not tested and the lid's cracked and he's asking top dollar.
I fancy that Sansui myself, good spot that. In fact I'd have had it if I wasn't retiring. A lot of amp for the money and killer looks too.

If you do go NVA then go all NVA except perhaps the speakers. Their stuff really does work at it's best as a piece, saying that as a former owner of it. Loudspeakers are the most important component by far so you really do need to give that some thought and research. Good loudspeakers would not be wasted on anyone, everyone will hear the benefit of that, even random people you drag in off the street. Keeping children off them is an issue I agree. There are models that sit low to the floor, blu-tak them to the stands, they won't be able to knock them off or over. Like these for example klhaudio.com/model-five-pair

That Sansui is a beauty. I know where there is one for sale, and it's Mint 😉
