I loved living abroad, good weather/food and much cheaper than the uk. Had many good friends and weren't tied down with 'can't do this/can't do that bullsh1t. Bad points, language barrier, not having my hifi (mine lost while in shipping). Will be going again once I get my finances sorted.

Depends whereabouts abroad. Sweden too cold and dark, in fact any of continental Europe I don't fancy that much. Beautiful places to live but the language and culture I'd struggle with. This is where I would retire to if I had enough cutter: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Kitts_and_Nevis

I guess you had your reasons for moving back?
Must admit I only think about moving overseas in the winter. In the summer I'm happy to stay in the UK.

ok westie how's life in cyprus for you and the wife? the good the bad and the ugly . I absolutely love it here. Thing is, I never thought of Britain as my homeland. Some places there are dear to me, such as the Northumberland coast, but I never was an Anglophile. I may spend a few months in Blighty now and again if I’m doing a property renovation, but that’s as much as I can see for me. My favourite time here is Spring, the winter lasts 12 weeks max and usually more like 8 or 9. Seeing the wild flowers everywhere and enjoying empty beaches in low twenties temperatures is just too good to be true. Being able to pick oranges, pomelos, bananas and figs at will when you’re walking around is amazing too. Downsides are small. Healthcare is expensive and not great, wages are low if you work and tourist numbers in the height of Summer can be high. You don’t tend to get plebs visiting this end of the island though.

Hifi lost in shipping must have been tough, I carry mine in suitcases, when I fly.

I’m wondering if this whole footy thing shows why some of us move away and others don’t. Maybe some of us never have that same sense of belonging.
I just had a look at AoS and people are still upset about England losing. I just can’t grasp what that must feel like. I’ve never been patriotic and couldn’t give two hoots about Britain as a country. It’s just somewhere I was born. Certain landscapes there strike a chord with me, but that’s it. I’d never think of England or the English and use the term “us” or “we”.
Maybe it’s not primarily patriotism. It could just be a footie thing. I never have two hoots about my local team either, so,it’s hard to say.

It's just a chance to indulge our primeval tribal nature for a short time. That's what the 'We' is all about.
Then when it is over we all go back to our warehouse or office and normal life resumes. It's deliberately stepping onto an emotional rollercoaster. I mean I could choose not to care as much if I really wanted. But that's no fun. Watched all the England games at my mate's house down the road, always loads of people there, great atmosphere. Put a load of bets on too. Gave me a bit more interest in the other games.

The Azores have appealed to me for a while.
The islands are attractive and have a nice enough moderate climate, if a little windy and wet at times and I like the Portugese that I've met. There's a decent ex-pat community there and many of the population speak English, crime is minimal and it's well away from political strife. The cost of living is sensibly low and the health care works!
I pick up languages pretty easily, so learning a bit of Portugese shouldn't be too difficult.
